Description
The Decedent Care and Transportation Specialist brings people who have passed away into Cypress Lawn’s care with dignity and respect. This position responds to removal requests, safely transfers and transports decedents, and maintains accurate identification and transfer records.
For many families, this specialist is the first Cypress Lawn team member they meet. The role calls for a calm presence, compassionate communication, sound judgment, and careful attention to detail. Between transportation assignments, the specialist helps keep our funeral home, vehicles, and services running smoothly.
Responsibilities
• Respond promptly to removal requests at residences, hospitals, care facilities, and other locations.
• Safely transfer and transport decedents using appropriate equipment, procedures, and team assistance.
• Verify identity and complete required documentation at each stage of the transfer.
• Handle personal belongings according to Cypress Lawn procedures.
• Communicate professionally and compassionately with families, health care providers, hospice teams, coroners, and colleagues.
• Keep the Transportation Supervisor informed of arrival times, delays, incidents, and other concerns.
• Clean, inspect, stock, and prepare vehicles and transportation equipment.
• Assist with the setup, staffing, and breakdown of funeral and memorial services.
• Help transport service equipment, supplies, and merchandise, and maintain clean, orderly work areas.
• Support other funeral home operations during time between transportation assignments.
Requirements
Qualifications
• Valid driver’s license and ability to meet Cypress Lawn’s driving requirements.
• Dependable, punctual, and able to follow detailed procedures.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to remain composed in sensitive situations.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and protect confidential information.
• Willingness to work the posted schedule, including any assigned evenings, weekends, holidays, or on call shifts.
• Experience in funeral service, mortuary transportation, health care, or a related field is preferred but not required. Training will be provided.
Physical Requirements
This is an active position that involves standing, walking, bending, pushing, pulling, moving equipment, and assisting with transfers in a variety of settings. The specialist must be able to safely perform the essential duties of the role, including lifting up to 100 pounds, with reasonable accommodation where applicable. The position also requires completion of an annual, job-related physical examination assessing the ability to perform these duties safely.
