Description

GFT is seeking an experienced Chief Inspector to join our Construction Services team in Conneticuit. This is a full-time, onsite opportunity to lead roadway related transportation projects, ensuring quality, safety, and efficiency in the field.

At GFT, we’re not just engineering the future; we’re meticulously building it. Our comprehensive suite of construction and program management services reflects our unwavering commitment to excellence, safety, innovation, and sustainability. Our construction management services are the cornerstone of our commitment to transforming communities and enhancing lives. We oversee every construction phase to help ensure projects are completed on schedule, within budget, and to the highest safety and quality standards.

What you’ll be challenged to do:

As a Chief Inspector, you will lead and oversee field inspection operations on roadway and bridge construction projects throughout Connecticut. You will supervise inspection personnel, coordinate with CTDOT representatives and contractors, and ensure construction activities comply with contract requirements, project specifications, and established quality and safety standards. You’ll manage project documentation, oversee construction inspections, review contractor progress, and support the administration of construction contracts. Your leadership will play a critical role in delivering high-impact transportation projects that improve mobility and infrastructure across Connecticut.

In this capacity, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Manage the daily observation of contractor operations for roadway and bridge construction projects.
  • Serve as the field point of contact for the client and all project stakeholders.
  • Supervise and coordinate an assigned field office, including inspectors, community liaisons, and office engineers.
  • Conduct reviews and verifications of construction schedules, including baseline schedules and updates, in coordination with the client.
  • Perform inspections and oversee field testing.
  • Assist in the preparation and negotiation of construction change orders.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly project reports.
  • Review payment vouchers, manning reports, payroll certifications, and other labor documentation from the contractor.
  • Chair project progress meetings and distribute meeting minutes.
  • Ensure site safety, permit compliance, and coordination with adjacent projects.
  • Monitor contractor compliance with safety and health plans as well as quality assurance requirements.
  • Work with the contractor to minimize disruptions to the public.
  • Log and coordinate with designers to respond to contractor submittals, RFIs, and shop drawings.
  • Prepare punch lists with the owner upon project completion.
  • Solve complex challenges relating to project schedules and budgets.
  • Oversee project personnel, timesheets, leave, and general team management.
  • Conduct cost-to-complete analyses.
  • Utilize spreadsheets, databases, and scheduling software to support project management functions.
  • Oversee inspection staff assignments and ensure construction activities receive appropriate inspection coverage.
  • Review inspection reports, quantity calculations, and construction documentation for accuracy and completeness.
  • Coordinate with CTDOT project engineers regarding construction issues, contractor performance, and project progress.
  • Provide technical guidance and direction to inspection personnel.

What you will bring to our firm:

Candidates must meet one of the following qualification combinations:

  • Valid Connecticut Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Construction Manager (CCM), or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) credential with a minimum of 5–6 years of relevant construction experience, depending on project requirements.
  • OR valid NICET Level IV Highway Construction Inspection certification with a minimum of 10–12 years of relevant construction experience, depending on project requirements.
  • Experience supervising construction inspection personnel on roadway, bridge, or transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Prior experience with CTDOT projects.
  • Knowledge of CTDOT construction procedures, specifications, and documentation requirements.
  • Ability to oversee field inspection activities and coordinate multiple construction operations.
  • Experience reviewing construction schedules, payment estimates, change orders, and contractor documentation.
  • Ability to prepare construction reports, correspondence, and recommendations regarding project issues.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and supervisory skills.
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends as project schedules require.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • OSHA 30-hour safety training certification preferred, unless required by the project.

Compensation:

The salary range for this role is $ 120,000 - $200,000 per year. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.

Featured Benefits:

  • Comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance.

  • Tax-deferred 401(k) savings plan.
