External Design Coordinator - Injection Molds

THE CANDIDATE: The ideal candidate will have 7+ years of experience in injection mold design and/or mold manufacturing, with strong technical understanding of mold design principles. This role is not a hands-on design position, but requires the ability to evaluate complex mold designs, identify risks, and ensure alignment with company standards and customer expectations.

THE ROLE:

The External Design Coordinator serves as the primary liaison between the company and external design providers. This role is responsible for coordinating external mold design activities, ensuring alignment with project timelines, and verifying that all deliverables meet company standards, customer requirements, and industry best practices.

This position applies strong technical judgment to review and validate injection mold designs, focusing on feasibility, manufacturability, and adherence to established standards. While not responsible for executing full design work, the role requires a deep understanding of injection mold design principles to effectively assess quality and identify risks.

The External Design Coordinator also supports the dissemination of company standards, onboarding of new design partners, and continuous improvement of external design capabilities.

Responsibilities include:

• Coordinate with external design providers on new and ongoing projects
• Ensure external design work aligns with project timelines and deliverable expectations
• Review and validate injection mold designs for feasibility, manufacturability, and adherence to company standards and best practices
• Identify tooling risks and ensure resolution prior to release
• Participate in internal and customer design reviews
• Validate and process documentation for purchase requisitions (e.g., materials, hot runner systems, commercial components, etc.)
• Review and release CAD data packages for manufacturing
• Execute ERP workflows and supporting documentation for design release
• Communicate company standards, updates, and expectations to external design providers
• Support onboarding and development of new external design sources
• Maintain and improve standard operating procedures related to external design coordination
• Contribute to continuous improvement of external design quality, consistency, and efficiency
• Effectively handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment

Skills and Qualifications:

• 7+ years of experience in injection mold design and/or mold manufacturing
• Strong understanding of injection mold design principles and tooling practices
• Proven ability to evaluate designs, identify risks, and make sound technical judgments
• Comfortable reviewing CAD data (CATIA V5 experience a plus), without the need to be a primary designer
• Experience participating in design reviews and working with cross-functional teams or suppliers
• Strong organizational and communication skills
• Ability to work independently and coordinate across multiple stakeholders
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, Teams)
• Detail-oriented with strong follow-through
