The Maintenance Worker 1/2 performs a variety of entry level maintenance work and equipment operation in assigned areas in the maintenance of city streets, sewers, drainage systems, and related structures; operates light, medium, and trains on some heavy construction equipment; may work independently or in a team situation.

Assists with installation and repair of sewer pipe; assists with TV inspections of sanitary and stormwater lines; cleans wastewater grit channels, clarifiers, and various tankage; assists with infiltration and inflow monitoring and smoke testing operations; cleans and maintains catch basins, wastewater channels, storm sewer, and wastewater lines with construction equipment; assists jet rodder / vactor operator with cleaning wastewater and stormwater lines.

Must maintain an active telephone number and be available and accessible for call-outs as required.

Salary: $25.13 - $31.31 hourly / $52,270.40 - $65,124.80 annually  

The City of Eugene determines starting pay within the range based on relevant education and experience as provided by the applicant in their application materials. This process is consistent with the Oregon Equal Pay Act (OEPA).

** NOTE:  Employees hired into the entry level Maintenance Worker 1 position are assigned to a specific Public Works Maintenance crew and are required to participate in a competency training program that is designed to take 18-24 months to complete.  After 18 months in the assignment, an employee’s position is eligible to flex to the semi-skilled Maintenance Worker 2 level when they have completed and shown basic proficiency in each skill area in addition to having the classification requirement minimum of three years public works maintenance, construction or repair experience.  For those hired without a Commercial Driver’s License, priority may be placed on that probationary requirement before beginning the proficiency training program.**

Performs a variety of entry level, and frequently heavy manual, maintenance activities in the assigned areas; operates a variety of equipment as required in the performance of assigned duties.
 
Performs manual maintenance activities such as hauling and spreading gravel to a uniform depth, shoveling and raking asphalt, clearing catch basins and ditches, and assists with installation and repair of sewer pipe.
 
Performs general maintenance of construction equipment, hand and power tools; identifies repairs and preventive maintenance needed for vehicles and large equipment.
 
May enter manholes or other confined spaces.
 
May work in and around raw sewage.
 
Maintains daily work records as required.
 
Performs minor carpentry, painting, concrete work, or other related tasks.
 
May train coworkers and seasonal employees in equipment use, care, and safety procedures.
 
Performs work outside in varying and extreme weather conditions while exposed to a variety of hazards; regularly lifts heavy objects and equipment.
 
Actively supports and respects diversity in the workplace.
 
May require shift work and weekend work.
 
Performs other related work as assigned.  

Minimum Qualifications

Experience

One year of experience in public works maintenance, construction or repair. Excavation, pipe repair or related experience preferred.

License or Certificate:
A valid Oregon driver's license or, the ability to obtain by date of hire; must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City's standard. Oregon law requires that an out-of-state license holder must obtain a valid Oregon license (with appropriate endorsements) within 30 days of becoming domiciled in the state (ORS 803.355).  

Ability to obtain an Oregon State Class A Commercial Driver's License within one year of hire date.

Flagger certification, or ability to obtain within six months of hire date.

Knowledge of:
Types and uses of tools and light equipment used in maintenance, repair, and/or construction work.

Standard safety precautions, safety hazards, and safe working procedures in areas assigned.

Maintenance, repair, and construction work in area of assignment.

Preventive maintenance practices.

Ability to:
Provide and wear personal protective equipment as required including footwear meeting OSHA and City requirements.

Follow verbal and written instructions and keep accurate work records.

Operate assigned equipment and specialized hand and power tools.

Perform strenuous physical work outdoors in varying weather conditions, which may include heavy lifting and direct contact with raw sewage.

Perform manual construction and maintenance duties requiring specific skills in assigned area.

If position requires, be available for shift work.

Maintain an active telephone number in order to be available to respond for emergency callback as necessary.

Learn new tasks and equipment operations as required.

Work independently and as part of a crew.

Identify safety hazards.

Assign, lead, train, and review the work of seasonal employees.

Communicate effectively, courteously, and tactfully with City employees and the public; establish effective working relationships.

Use computers.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions  
Mostly outdoors in field environment with exposure to all typical weather conditions, including travel from site to site.  Exposure to sharp objects, burns from hot materials, pinch points, moving objects/vehicles in right of way, dust/noise/vibration, working at heights, biological hazards from sewers, grease/smoke/ material fumes/gasses, cramped quarters, inclement weather conditions, slippery surfaces, electrical shock, toxic/caustic chemicals and animal/insect bites. Operates City vehicles, forklift, hoist/aerial lifts, ladders, variety of hand/power tools, jackhammer, measuring and testing equipment, variety of specialized trucks/equipment associated with the construction and maintenance trades. Uses safety equipment including hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, steel-toed safety shoes, hearing protection, gloves, dust mask, respirator, SCBA as required, rubber boots, seat belts and other PPE as required.  
What to Expect from our Selection Process?

Applicants are screened based upon their relevant knowledge, abilities, skills, experience, and training. The selection process varies according to the position and can include such things as screening of supplemental questionnaires, written or skill tests, ability or fitness tests, interviews, and assessment processes. In addition, background investigations and records checks may be required. Some positions also require applicants to have a psychological evaluation and/or physical examination and a drug test prior to employment.
