Legislative Services - Legal Services   

Status: Contract Full Time - Up to 6 Months

Hiring Range: $162,893 - $183,255

Location: 10 Peel Centre Drive, Brampton  

Hours of work: 35 hours per week  

 

The Regional Municipality of Peel is seeking a driven, customer service oriented & collaborative lawyer to join its Legal Services group to provide high quality and effective legal advice on complex technical legal matters and in areas of high legal risk. Our Legal Counsel can be experts in a particular field but could also provide general legal advice as needed.   

Responsible for the Dispute Resolution & Construction Portfolio

Providing strategic legal advice and representation related to litigation, dispute resolution, construction projects, procurement matters, and risk management. The successful candidate will advise Regional departments on a variety of disputes and claims, including insurance defence, commercial litigation, landlord and tenant matters, construction disputes, construction liens, procurement challenges, and real property disputes. The role involves representing the Region's interests through negotiation, mediation, administrative proceedings, and litigation processes while developing proactive strategies to mitigate legal risk and support Regional priorities.

What you will do in this role:  

  • Provide strategic legal advice and representation in a broad range of dispute resolution and litigation matters, including insurance defence, tort claims, commercial litigation, landlord and tenant disputes, real property disputes, construction disputes, and construction lien matters.
  • Actively manage litigation files through all stages of the dispute resolution process, including investigations, pleadings, discoveries, mediations, hearings, trials, and settlement negotiations.
  • Represent and advocate for the Region's interests before courts, tribunals, arbitrators, mediators, and other adjudicative bodies.
  • Advise Regional departments on procurement-related legal risks, contractual disputes, claims management, and dispute avoidance strategies.
  • Provide practical and strategic legal counsel on complex construction matters, including project-related disputes, contract enforcement, delay claims, deficiency claims, and lien-related proceedings.
  • Lead negotiations and facilitate the resolution of disputes through effective conflict management, problem-solving, and settlement discussions.
  • Prepare and review legal opinions, pleadings, factums, motions, settlement agreements, correspondence, and other litigation-related documents.
  • Assess legal risk and develop proactive strategies to protect the Region's interests while supporting operational and business objectives.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with client departments, external legal counsel, members of the public, senior leadership, and municipal, provincial, and federal partners.
  • Manage multiple litigation and advisory files simultaneously while balancing competing priorities and meeting critical deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Provide clear, concise, and well-reasoned legal advice supported by strong research, analysis, and sound professional judgment.
  • Monitor emerging developments in litigation, construction law, procurement, administrative law, and municipal legislation to ensure best practices and legal compliance.

 

What the role requires:  

  • Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB) or Juris Doctor degree 
  • Call to the Ontario Bar and be a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario 
  • Minimum of 1 year relevant experience as a practicing Ontario lawyer or equivalent; international experience will be considered
  • Knowledge of municipal legislation and businesses an asset

In this role, you’ll benefit from the flexibility of a hybrid work arrangement that prioritizes meaningful in-person connection. A minimum of two days per week on-site is expected, with additional in-person presence as operational needs evolve. This arrangement allows for a blend of in person and hybrid work that adapts to support both organizational priorities and employee flexibility and is subject to change over time.
