Description

The purpose of this position is to perform standardized installation, modification, testing, and removal of vehicle-mounted equipment for County fleet vehicles. Under general supervision, installs emergency lighting, radios, sirens, consoles, partitions, and related equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications, safety standards, and Fleet Services procedures to ensure vehicles are properly equipped, reliable, and ready for service.

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Installs, modifies, removes, and reinstalls emergency lighting, sirens, radios, cameras, consoles, partitions, cages, and other vehicle-mounted equipment in accordance with approved build specifications, manufacturer requirements, and safety standards.
  • Performs routine electrical and mechanical upfitting activities, including wiring, grounding, circuit protection, cable routing, mounting, and securing equipment. 
  • Conducts functional testing, inspections, and quality control checks to verify proper operation, safety, and compliance of installed equipment.
  • Reviews work orders, wiring diagrams, technical manuals, and installation instructions to complete assignments accurately and efficiently.
  • Maintains accurate work orders, installation records, equipment inventories, and related documentation within Fleet Services systems.
  • Operates and maintains hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Assists senior upfitters with complex installations, troubleshooting, special projects, and equipment programming as assigned.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work environment and adheres to all Fleet Services policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
  • Communicates and coordinates with Fleet personnel and internal customers regarding vehicle equipment requirements, installation status, and operational needs.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by vocational or technical training in automotive technology, electronics, mechanics, or a related field preferred.
  • Over six months and up to and including one year involving mechanical, electrical, automotive, equipment installation, or related technical work.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County Council will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for the illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment. Employment is contingent upon clearing both the drug screening and background investigation.
