The University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law (UNH Law), a national leader in practical legal education with a commitment to inclusion, diversity, and quality engagement for all, seeks to hire a Lecturer to serve as Assistant Director of Legal Residencies.  

The legal residency program is a foundation of the practical legal training at UNH Law.  The program allows students to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world legal setting by working under the supervision of attorneys or other professionals.  Through this experience, students build skills, characteristics, and competencies essential to success.  

The Assistant Director is a full-time member of the law faculty who participates in faculty governance.  The positions demands administrative and communication skills necessary to assist with running and promoting a program that involves numerous constituents, including UNH Law staff and faculty, alumni, students, judges, lawyers, and other professional practitioners.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assisting the Director of Legal Residencies with developing and maintaining high-quality legal residency field placements meeting the needs of a diverse student population.

  • Creating curriculum for and teaching legal residency courses in compliance with ABA Standards.

  • Communicating with and advising students about legal residency placements.

  • Assisting students in securing legal residency placements in all types of legal practice.

  • Mentoring students during their legal residencies as they develop professional identities and lawyering skills.

  • Cultivating and managing relationships with existing and potential legal residency placements and supervisors including regular communications with the bar, bench, and other legal professionals.

  • Assisting the Director of Legal Residencies with program administration and compliance with academic rules and ABA Standards.

  • Assisting the Director of Legal Residencies with program assessment to accomplish program goals and maintain an accessible, student-centered program that empowers students to grow into thoughtful, skilled, and practice-ready legal professionals.

  • Assisting the Director of Legal Residencies with the recruitment and supervision of adjunct faculty for legal residency courses.

  • Collaborating with other UNH Law departments, including the law clinics, Career and Academic Advising Office, Academic Success Program, Admissions, and Registrar’s Office for student success.

  • Collaborating with Marketing, Alumni Relations, and Admissions to promote the program.

  • Engaging with the nationwide clinical legal education community to stay abreast of current trends and developments.

  • Staying informed about current issues in legal practice to help support students through their residencies and prepare students for practice upon graduation.

Requirements

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school.

  • Legal practice experience.

  • Demonstrated skill at working collaboratively.

  • Demonstrated administrative leadership skills.

  • Strong interest in all aspects of legal practice and the profession.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including great listening skills and ability to work with students at times of high stress in their lives.

  • Interest in engaging with the national externship and clinical communities.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Legal practice experience.

  • Experience and interest in mentoring and supervising students.

  • High degree of professionalism in all aspects of lawyering.

  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.

  • Creativity and flexibility in approaching and solving problems.

  • Strong interest in all aspects of legal practice, legal education, and the legal profession.

  • Flexibility in scheduling and being available for various events to support the program.

  • Familiarity with and comfort navigating various software platforms and technology.

  • Strong organization skills and ability to manage multiple competing obligations.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to use CANVAS or other technology for delivery of online education.

  • Clinical or externship teaching experience.

  • Demonstrated professionalism in the bar, including state or national involvement.

Compensation Pay Range: 

$85,000-$95,000  

The rank of the selected candidate will depend upon the candidate’s qualifications.
