POSITION OVERVIEW
BDC is the only bank dedicated exclusively to Canadian entrepreneurs, supporting the growth of small and medium-sized businesses across Canada. As a Valuation Specialist, you will be responsible for determining the fair value of BDC Capital’s portfolio of equity and debt investments for financial reporting purposes. You will support investment portfolios across Cleantech, Growth Equity, Venture Capital, and Intellectual Property Financing. Your work contributes directly to accurate financial reporting and informed business decisions that support Canadian businesses.
CHALLENGES TO BE MET
- Lead and complete quarterly and ad hoc fair value assessments (mark-to-market exercises) for equity and debt investments.
- Partner with internal stakeholders and external auditors to ensure timely delivery of accurate valuation information and supporting documentation.
- Validate valuation methodologies, assumptions, and supporting documentation in accordance with BDC valuation directives.
- Perform valuation analyses, identify valuation issues, and provide recommendations to management.
- Review, prepare, and validate financial models used in valuation processes.
- Support the presentation of valuation results to valuation committees and senior management.
- Collaborate with BDC Capital investment teams to ensure consistent, timely, and useful financial reporting.
- Conduct portfolio analyses and evaluate industry and market trends.
- Provide value-added support and insights to investment teams.
- Contribute to a collaborative environment where inclusion, learning, and partnership support business outcomes.
- Use AI-enabled productivity tools, where appropriate, to support research, summarization, documentation, analysis review, information synthesis and recurring workflow improvements, while maintaining professional judgment and appropriate human oversight.
- Contribute to the identification, testing and adoption of automation and AI-agent opportunities that can improve efficiency, consistency and quality in valuation, investment accounting and reporting processes.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Required qualifications
Education & professional credentials
- Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Professional accounting designation (CPA).
- CBV designation is considered an asset.
- Audit experience is considered an asset.
Experience
- 3 to 5 years of experience in equity and complex debt valuation.
- Experience performing financial analysis and valuation assessments, as CBV or valuation expert role in accounting firms, venture capital or private equity funds, investment banking, pension funds and similar financial institutions.
- Experience reviewing, building, or validating financial models.
- Experience working with financial reporting requirements and valuation documentation.
- Experience using market and company data for valuation purposes.
- Experience to leverage AI tools to improve productivity in valuation analysis, financial reporting, documentation, research, data validation, identify trends, draft communications and support decision-making while maintaining professional judgment and appropriate oversight.
- Experience integrating AI-assisted workflows into financial modeling, market research, audit support or investment reporting is considered an asset.
Technical skills
- Valuation techniques for equity and debt investments.
- Financial analysis and accounting knowledge.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including:
- Financial modeling
- Sensitivity analysis
- Scenario analysis
- Data analysis
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
- Experience using financial market data platforms such as:
- Capital IQ
- PitchBook
- Knowledge of the Growth Capital, Venture Capital and/or Private Equity industry.
- Working knowledge of artificial intelligence tools and digital assistants, including Microsoft Copilot and other generative AI platforms, with the ability to apply them responsibly in a financial services environment.
- Understanding of data governance, confidentiality, model limitations and responsible use of AI when working with sensitive financial and investment information.
- Knowledge of workflow automation and AI-enabled productivity solutions, including Power Query, Power Automate, Power BI and AI agent technologies, is considered an asset.
- Ability to evaluate, test and adopt emerging AI and agentic solutions to enhance valuation, accounting, audit support, reporting and portfolio management processes.
- Master of prompt design, human-in-the-loop controls and validation techniques appropriate for financial reporting and valuation environments is considered an asset.
Languages
- Bilingual in French and English.

- Knowledge of climate change reduction initiatives.
- Operational knowledge of a technical industry.
