Hybrid WorkingJob Description Summary
The purpose of the Engineering Lead is to support the Lab leadership and the teams within their area to deliver against the strategy and their delivery commitments. Colleagues in these roles must come from an Engineering background, and this position represents the conscious decision of an Engineer to progress down the management track of the Y-shaped model. This allows these colleagues to start building up the broader set of skills required to operate in a engineering management position, not all of which will be developed under the Software Engineer role. However, they will remain deeply technical, providing technical guidance to teams and making sure that they make the right technology choices, though the broader set of responsibilities will often (though not always) take them away from actual coding on a very regular basis.Job Description
About the Customer Data Services Platform
We're the team that looks after the customer data for the whole of Lloyds Banking Group. Our mission is to make this data available for the right purpose with the appropriate confidentiality and always ensuring a phenomenal engineering experience based on performance, resilience, and integrity.
The systems we support, underpin almost everything we do as Lloyds Banking Group. We maintain these systems with the highest standard, with an ambition to take ownership of the operational support 24/7 using SRE principles.
The Customer Data Services (CDS) platform operates within the CIO Enabling Services and our purpose is to ‘Enable the Bank to gain value from data by providing safe and efficient Group-wide data capabilities and services’. We work closely in partnership with our colleagues in the Chief Data & Analytics Office (CDAO).
The CDS platform is responsible for maintaining, transforming and innovating the infrastructure and software required to ensure that our Customer data, API platforms and technological capabilities meet the bank's needs now and in the future.
Our core technologies are:
- Mainframe using COBOL
- API platform using Java
- Commercial customer management database using Java
We maintain and develop a couple of database systems ; DB2, IBM MDM and Oracle and various tooling for middleware management
Our target is to start with a cloud first (private and public) approach in our hosting strategy and to transform our systems from a monolith to a microservice based system whilst decommissioning our legacy services and systems. For data and analytics our public cloud target is Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and the Lab’s scope includes building a customer system of engagement out there.
The Lab at its core delivers scaled integration events of large scale acquisitions / divestments, e.g. with our colleagues in Insurance & Wealth; changes to the Customer master architecture to support change within value streams to integrate into our Customer Architecture e.g. APIs into the architecture or mainframe data structure within the OCIS database across all divisions within the Group and, modernising our technology and associated delivery methods through upgrades or movement to private and public cloud.
Here's how you'll make a difference…
- You will learn our business, so that you can always put our customers first and maximise our value to them.
- You will think strategically, understanding a complex and heterogeneous technical environment, and thus how to leverage emerging technology.
- You will advise on, and make, hard prioritisation calls.
- You will establish productive, enduring relationships with external and internal partners.
- You will immerse yourself in the code, to better support your teams.
- You will lead teams, shaping their vision, driving innovation, encouraging collaboration and ensuring your engineers are enabled to work to their best.
- Your teams will always deliver.
