Description
DEFINITION: This position assists in the maintenance of and performs skilled work in construction, repair and maintenance of parks, facilities and grounds. Responsible for removing low handling limbs, maintain rights-of way and traffic islands. Repairs damage caused by erosion, removes low hanging limbs. of the City's open ditches, canals, basins, sidewalks, and other areas.
REPORTS TO: The Crew Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions.
- Maintains and repairs assigned tools and equipment.
- Constructs Park structures and recreational equipment, including swing sets, basketball goals, tennis courts, gazebos, fishing piers, look-out piers, and decks.
- Maintains and cleans swimming pools and related equipment; adds chemicals to ensure water quality.
- Operates lawn mowing equipment, chainsaws, pole saws, shovels, picks, and axes.
- Operates tools and equipment, including skill saw, table saw, miter saw, hammer drill, level, and wrenches; operates backhoes and other light equipment and sewer jet.
- Cleans open ditches; landscapes and sows grass.
- Repairs and replaces drain covers and basins.
- Repairs damage caused by erosion.
- Removes low hanging limbs.
- Maintains rights-of-way and traffic islands.Repairs water fountains and restrooms; repairs roofs; paints structures; resurfaces basketball courts and tennis courts; removes graffiti from buildings and sidewalks.
- Assists with the demolition of condemned structures.
- Transports materials and equipment to work sites.
- Installs barricades and other traffic control devices.
- Assists in the collection of loose leaves.
- Follows safety guidelines.
- Responds to after-hours emergencies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of assigned tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of park maintenance policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of safety standards.
- Ability to prepare daily worksheets.
- Ability to follow safety guidelines.
- Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions.
- Skill in the repair and maintenance of hand and power tools.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Crew Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instruction and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the Personnel Policy Manual; OSHA regulations; work zone safety standards; and equipment operation and repair manuals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related construction duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the work.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to participate in the repair and maintenance of the stormwater system. Success in this position contributes to a well-maintained City infrastructure.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers and members of the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, stooping, standing, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
