What does the job involve?

The Crude Trader will be part of Equinor’s Calgary based crude trading team and will be responsible for managing the company’s physical trading activity in Canadian crude grades in Canada and the U.S., as well as related terminal and pipeline positions.

The position requires close cooperation with Equinor traders in Calgary and Houston, both in market discussions and in ensuring optimal trading strategies.

What will my tasks be?

Within this position, your key tasks will be to:

  • Contribute to the company’s trading activities, with a focus on physical trading of Canadian crude grades in onshore US and Canadian markets, serving as the primary market expert and representing Equinor alongside other traders.

  • Identify and mature business opportunities across commodities and assets in alignment with the company’s crude strategy.

  • Manage daily physical trading across US and Canadian markets, as well as terminal and pipeline positions, including risk-management coordination physical and paper activities and execution of trading activities within Equinor’s crude trading framework.

  • Develop and execute trading and hedging strategies based on comprehensive market analysis to optimize commercial outcomes within risk mandates, in close collaboration with lead traders.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Operations and Risk, and actively contribute to local and global discussions to refine market views and trading plans.

  • Bachelor's degree in commerce or engineering, or correlated fields. 

  • 5+ years of relevant crude trading experience, with a strong background in physical crude flows.  

  • Expertise in Canadian and US onshore crude market fundamentals, including supply and demand, crude qualities, oil transportation, storage and blending.  

  • In-depth understanding of the risks involved in commodity transactions and related risk management, including operational safety.  

  • Expertise with analytical tools and digital skillsets for modeling is highly desirable.

  • Comprehensive understanding of underlying transportation, logistics, and balancing mechanisms.  

  • Thorough expertise in relevant derivative instruments, including futures and swaps.  

  • Extensive knowledge of price concepts and structures, hedging implementation, contractual constraints, and legal frameworks.  

  • Strong emphasis on teamwork and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
