Description
The Defensive Coordinator – Flag Football is responsible for designing, installing, and executing a unit-specific system for one of six franchises in the league. Operating in a broadcast-first, neutral venue professional environment, the Defensive Coordinator owns the team’s scheme development, player preparation, and in-game play calling for their defensive unit.
This position will work in close partnership with the Head Coach and the league’s Director of Coaching to deliver a high-performance, professional athlete experience that upholds the league’s standards on and off the field. All Coordinators are centrally employed by the league and report through the Director of Coaching to the SVP, Operations – Flag Football.
Responsibilities:
Scheme Design & Installation
- Design and install a complete unit-specific system within the TMRW flag football rules framework
- Develop a comprehensive playbook and establish the weekly scheme installation schedule, ensuring players have full command of assignments, adjustments, and situational protocols
- Build and execute the weekly practice plan for the assigned unit, emphasizing game-speed reps, scheme recognition, and the technical skill sets specific to flag football
- Adjust the scheme throughout the season in response to opponent tendencies, player development, and competitive results
- Stay current on flag football innovation incorporating relevant concepts into the unit's approach
Player Development & Film
- Conduct individual position meetings and group film sessions throughout the week, ensuring every player understands their assignment, their role in the scheme, and the standard expected of them
- Evaluate all unit film weekly, identifying technique breakdowns, assignment errors, and areas of improvement - communicating feedback directly, specifically, and constructively to players
- Partner with the Director, Player Personnel on player evaluation at the combine, providing position-specific input that reflects the technical and athletic demands of the role
- Develop international players acquired from different flag football systems, adapting teaching approaches for athletes whose training may reflect different rule sets and competitive formats
- Build individual player development plans for each athlete in the unit, tracking progress throughout the season and communicating development priorities to the Head Coach
Game-Day Operations
- Own the in-game play calling process for the assigned unit, including pre-snap communication, in-game adjustments, and situational decision-making in critical moments
- Manage the halftime adjustment process, diagnosing what the opponent has shown, communicating corrections clearly, and ensuring players execute adjustments immediately in the second half
- Participate in the mandatory halftime broadcast interview and any other required media obligations as directed by the Head Coach and Communications team
- Conduct the post-game unit review with players and the Head Coach, establishing the scheme and technique priorities for the following week's preparation
- Comply with all league broadcast obligations related to the in-game microphone program and sideline conduct standards
Collaboration & Standards
- Collaborate with the other coordinator and the Head Coach on shared practice planning, competitive periods, and cross-unit player development priorities
- Participate in the Director of Coaching's annual coaching development program, including cross-franchise film sharing and scheme clinics
- Uphold the league's Personal Conduct Policy, professional standards, and the athlete welfare commitments that define the league's culture
- Represent the franchise professionally in all league settings - games, media availabilities, community events, and coaching meetings
Requirements
- 5+ years of coaching experience at the collegiate, professional, or elite national team level in flag football or tackle football
- Demonstrated ability to design and install a scheme and teach it effectively to athletes with varied football backgrounds
- Strong working knowledge of flag football rules, including no-run zone regulations, blitz restrictions, and overtime procedures
- Strong communication and teaching skills - the ability to build unit identity and trust in a fast-paced professional environment
- Ability to operate in a broadcast-first environment, including mandatory media obligations during games
- Experience developing athletes at the professional or high-level collegiate level, including building individual player development plans
Preferred:
- Prior experience as a coordinator or play caller at the professional or high-level collegiate flag football level
- Experience coaching women athletes and a demonstrated ability to build high-performance unit cultures in women's sports programs
- Ability to evaluate and develop international players coming from different flag football systems and competitive formats
- Experience with film software, performance analytics, and data-informed scheme design and game planning
