JOB SUMMARY

Library Systems and Services is seeking a creative, enthusiastic, technology-minded Makerspace Coordinator. The Makerspace Coordinator will serve as the primary point of contact for the Makerspace and overseeing the activities and operations of the makerspace. This will include maintenance of memberships and customer information, equipment/facility needs, development of educational programs, and with outreach and promoting the makerspace. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience and be comfortable with various maker technologies (3D printing, cutting machines, sewing machines, and digital media). 

Hours Per Week: 40

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES

An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.     

  • Foster a welcoming, safe, inclusive, and organized environment in the Makerspace that encourages patrons to explore their creativity and develop new skills
  • Oversees the development and implementation of programs, policies and procedures fo the makerspace.
  • Develop and maintain an inventory of equipment; develop application and instructional manuals. Stay up to date on trends in creative library spaces and recommend improvements to the space, website, training, etc. 
  • Work and build relationships with students, faculty, and staff; support development and operation of programs which serve the community, and public audiences
  • Compile Makerspace user statistics monthly, as directed. Participate in short and long-term departmental goals and objectives
  • Design, initiate, plan, host, and conduct programs and activities in the Makerspace for the public, with a strong focus on serving school age, tweens, older teens and adults.
  • Provide guidance and support to patrons, assisting them with project ideas, troubleshooting, and technical skills using provided equipment and software.
  • Perform general troubleshooting and routine maintenance of equipment and software while liaising with IT professionals on more advanced troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment.
  • Represent the Library at community events, showcasing the Makerspace equipment and opportunities, and actively engage in outreach to promote makerspace resources.
  • Perform other duties and assignments as required: including but not limited to assistance at circulation and patron assistance
  • Work with staff to plan and promote Summer Learning events and programs associated with the Makerspace
  • Addresses or escalates patron conduct or safety issues to appropriate management
  • Follow all Huntsville Public Library policies and procedures.


Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS

An individual should possess the knowledge, skill, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education, training and/or work experience required.

  • H.S. Diploma required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. 
  • Two years of experience with makerspace technology, technology instruction, or other creative-based work.
  • Public library experience working with technology and the general public preferred.
  • Experience in planning and executing programs and events.
  • Strong writing, presentation, and public speaking skills.
  • Excellent instructional and customer service skills
  • Familiarity with tools and equipment associated with a makerspace required, including but not limited to: 3D printing – programming and managing, electronics and robotics, sewing and Cricut machines, Apple technology, including iPads
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment, critical thinking, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work various shifts including evenings/weekends.
  • Bilingual speaking is a plus

Physical Requirements: 

  • Must be able to frequently move from place to place within the location.
  • Retrieve books and other items on high shelves; lift, push/pull, hold/carry of items weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds. of heavy boxes, books, and equipment; walk; bend; stoop; reach; and climb.
