Industrial Maintenance Mechanic – West Point

About the Role:

This position performs a variety of highly skilled journey-level work by troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing a wide range of rotating mechanical equipment, including biosolids decanting blowers, influent and effluent pumps, biogas scrubbing compressors, gearboxes, conveyance systems, and multiple piping systems. You’ll use your maintenance experience to troubleshoot and repair high-level equipment issues, ensuring reliable operations across the West Point treatment plant. We’re looking for a goal-oriented, self-motivated individual who helps foster a safe, supportive, and collaborative team culture. 

This role will work both independently and in collaboration with other skilled trade and plant operations staff. To ensure a safe work environment, this role will use appropriate PPE and proper Lock-Out Tag Out procedures around all electrical, mechanical, and environmental hazards as well as using safe work procedures that include working in Permit-Required Confined Spaces. The candidate will perform both preventive maintenance as well as unscheduled work on all related equipment and provide stand-by coverage on a rotating basis for emergent needs after a probationary period. Team members also participate in Capital Improvement Projects, as assigned, by providing input to project management to support equipment upgrades and replacements. What You Will Be Doing:

• Perform maintenance, repair, and overhaul of a wide variety of complex mechanical machinery, including pumps, motors, grinders, blowers and compressors, centrifuges, gearboxes, hydraulic systems, and gravity belt thickeners, independently or with minimal guidance.

• Install, maintain, and repair large plumbing and piping systems used in a wastewater treatment facility, ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards.

• Fabricate, modify, and repair plant piping and other heavy equipment using welding equipment, cutting torches, and plasma cutters; contribute to design improvements when appropriate.

• Safely operate a variety of hand, power, and pneumatic tools, including grinders, drill motors, drill presses, band saws, ironworkers, table saws, and hydraulic presses, applying expert knowledge of proper techniques and shop practices.

• Lead or mentor less experienced mechanics or helpers, providing guidance and support on complex tasks and troubleshooting.

• Perform other duties as assigned, supporting the overall reliability and safety of plant operations.

Qualifications You Bring: 

• Extensive knowledge of the safe use, care, and operation of hand, power, and pneumatic tools, as well as specialized shop equipment, for mechanical maintenance and repair.
• Strong knowledge of plumbing techniques and principles, including installation, maintenance, and repair of large-scale wastewater facility piping systems.
• Proficient knowledge of welding techniques, including MIG, TIG, and stick welding, as well as cutting and fabrication for heavy equipment and plant piping. Comprehensive understanding of pumps and pumping systems, including motor components, controls, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance for multiple pump types.
• Skill in reading and interpreting mechanical drawings, schematics, manuals, and technical instructions; ability to prepare clear written and oral documentation of work performed.
• Knowledge and practical experience with rigging, hoisting, and safe operation of overhead cranes and lifting devices for moving heavy equipment.
• Ability to lead or mentor less-experienced mechanics or helpers, providing guidance on complex mechanical tasks and troubleshooting techniques.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

• Valid Washington State Driver's License

• Proficiency with computers and software for equipment diagnostics, maintenance tracking, and technical documentation.

Physical Requirements:

• This position requires flexibility to work varied hours and report during adverse or inclement weather conditions.

• Incumbents perform field and shop work at the wastewater treatment plant and associated facilities. Work involves lifting and carrying equipment and materials up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders in and out of tanks, and working in confined spaces.

• Employees regularly operate heavy machinery, rigging, and power tools, and work around high noise levels, noxious odors, and potentially slippery or uneven surfaces.

• Must be able to safely perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods, including standing, bending, kneeling, and reaching while completing maintenance, repair, and installation work.

Workplace Exposure:

• Work is performed outdoors and indoors in an industrial wastewater environment under all weather conditions.

• Employees are regularly exposed to chemicals, biohazards, and high noise levels.

• Position requires entry into confined spaces and use of appropriate personal protective equipment, including respirators, as needed.

• Employees must follow safety protocols to minimize exposure to potential hazards while performing maintenance, repair, and operational tasks.

• Work Schedule: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week. This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible.
