Clinical Nurse Specialist – Infection Prevention and Control   

Full-time (37.5 hours per week) | Permanent

The Purpose of This Role:

The post holder has a pivotal role in service planning and development, coordinating and managing activity and resources within the Infection Prevention & Control programme for the hospital.  The post holder responsibilities include the development and implementation of Infection Prevention & Control policies and procedures, the monitoring of activity and the delivery of agreed levels of service for the designated areas.  You will provide clinical leadership and promotion of the mission & values of the hospital.

The aim of the post is to maximise the operational efficiency of the Infection Prevention & Control services through the allocation and effective use of all hospital resources and utilisation of facilities.  To provide an informed and consultative resource service for nurses, doctors and other allied health care workers on matters relating to infection prevention and control to ensure quality and continuity of patient care.  To provide a programme of education and training for multi-disciplinary staff that benefits patients and families as agreed with the Infection Control Committee (I.C.C.) and the Quality & Patient Safety Committee in line with Accreditation Standards 

Candidate Criteria:

Qualifications:

  • Be registered, or be eligible for registration, in the General Nurse Division of the Register of Nurses kept by the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland [NMBI]
  • Relevant Post Graduate Clinical Qualification in Infection Control or in the process of completing same.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Infection Prevention & Control service, to ensure the highest professional standards using an evidence based, care planning approach
  • Provide a high level of professional and clinical leadership
  • Manage the implementation of the Joint Commission International Infection Control standards for the prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections
  • Co-ordinate the Infection, Prevention & Control committee meetings
  • Partake and report as required to the Quality & Patient Safety Committee
  • Participate in teams/meetings/committees as appropriate, communicating and working effectively with others
  • Manage own caseload in accordance with the needs of the post
  • Manage infection control records in accordance with hospital policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Adhere to and contribute to the development and maintenance of infection prevention control standards, protocols and guidelines consistent with the highest standards of service user care
  • Evaluate and manage the implementation of Best Practice Policy and procedures
  • Participate in clinical audit, surveillance and research studies as required
  • Develop metrics for quality monitoring and performance review. 
  • To ensure all incidents concerning patients and staff are reported appropriately, documenting full details being aware of legal requirements and implications.
  • Have overall responsibility for the monitoring, surveillance, investigation, prevention & control of Hospital Acquired infections in conjunction with the consultant microbiologist
  • Advise Nursing Management and Bed Management of individual patients with infectious conditions
  • Provide the necessary supervision, co-ordination and deployment of nursing staff within the Infection Prevention & Control Department to ensure the delivery of care in the designated area
  • Promote an environment that is conducive to development of best practice
  • Participate and play a role in the Hospitals accreditation processes (e.g. JCI and HIQA) and other quality management systems in the BSHS to ensure compliance with quality and safety standards for the Infection Prevention & Control service.

Essential Requirements:

  • R.G.N Registration
  • At least 7 years post registration experience, minimum 1 year within IPC
  • Suitable management experience and /or qualification
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, accountability and communication skills
  • The ability to demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development at the appropriate level.

  • Roster will generally be over 5 days a week however a flexible approach to work patterns is required in line with service.
