Skilled Engineering Helper (IUOE Local 68)

Location: Harborside Plaza 2 & 3
200 & 210 Hudson Street
Jersey City, NJ

Schedule: Monday – Friday | 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Estimated compensation: $36.62/hr

Position Overview

Harborside Plaza 2 & 3 is seeking a dependable and mechanically skilled Skilled Engineering Helper to join our Building Engineering Department.

The Skilled Engineering Helper is an important member of the Engineering team and plays a key role in supporting the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of approximately 2 million square feet of Class A commercial office space.

This position is designed to provide direct support to the Building Engineers and Chief Engineer by assisting with preventative maintenance, repairs, inspections, tenant service requests, and daily building operations.

While the Engineering Helper will be assigned individual tasks and responsibilities, the primary focus of this position is to support the Engineering staff, improve department efficiency, and contribute to the overall success of building operations.

The ideal candidate is someone with strong mechanical aptitude, a willingness to learn, a positive attitude, and the desire to build a long-term career in commercial building engineering through IUOE Local 68.

Key Responsibilities

Working under the direction of the Chief Engineer and Building Engineers, the Skilled Engineering Helper will:

  • Assist Building Engineers with the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of building mechanical systems.
  • Perform assigned preventative maintenance tasks and routine building maintenance activities.
  • Complete individual work assignments as directed by Engineering Management.
  • Support engineers during equipment inspections, repairs, troubleshooting, and emergency response situations.
  • Assist with the operation and maintenance of:
    • Air Handling Units (AHUs)
    • Fan-powered boxes
    • Variable Air Volume (VAV) systems
    • Pumps and motors
    • Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
    • Cooling towers
    • Domestic water systems
    • Mechanical equipment and building infrastructure
  • Replace filters, belts, bearings, lubricants, lighting components, and other routine maintenance items.
  • Assist with seasonal maintenance activities, equipment shutdowns, and scheduled building projects.
  • Deliver tools, materials, and equipment needed to support engineering work.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe mechanical rooms, equipment areas, and engineering workspaces.
  • Assist contractors and vendors performing work within the property.
  • Perform routine equipment inspections and report deficiencies, unusual conditions, or safety concerns to Engineering personnel.
  • Respond professionally to tenant service requests and assist with timely completion of work orders.
  • Maintain accurate records of completed work utilizing the building maintenance management system.
  • Follow all company safety procedures, OSHA requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, and building operating policies.

Role Expectations

The Skilled Engineering Helper is expected to:

  • Work collaboratively with Building Engineers and property operations staff.
  • Provide reliable support that allows engineers to focus on advanced troubleshooting, repairs, and critical building systems.
  • Complete assigned tasks safely, efficiently, and professionally.
  • Take ownership of assigned responsibilities while understanding that the primary purpose of the role is to support the Engineering Department as a whole.
  • Maintain a professional attitude when interacting with tenants, contractors, vendors, and fellow employees.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn and develop technical skills through hands-on experience and union training.

Qualifications

The successful candidate should possess:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Mechanical aptitude and interest in commercial building operations.
  • Previous experience in commercial maintenance, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, construction, industrial maintenance, or a related trade preferred.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical systems and building equipment.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, ladders, and basic testing equipment.
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete assigned tasks accurately.
  • Strong work ethic and dependable attendance.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments while supporting multiple engineering needs.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and continuous improvement.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to:

  • Lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Climb stairs, ladders, and access equipment throughout the property.
  • Work in mechanical rooms, rooftops, equipment areas, and other building service spaces.
  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, and perform physical maintenance activities for extended periods.
  • Work safely in varying indoor and outdoor conditions.
  • Assist during emergency building situations when required.

Training and Career Development

This position is represented by IUOE Local 68.

The successful candidate must be eligible for union membership and will be required to participate in the IUOE Local 68 Training Program. The employee will be expected to successfully complete all required certifications, licenses, and training requirements established by the Union and Employer.

Work Schedule

  • Monday through Friday
  • 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
  • Overtime, emergency response, scheduled shutdowns, and occasional after-hours work may be required based on building operational needs.
