The Division of Cardiology’s Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) has an outstanding opportunity for a Research & Implementation RN to support our portfolio of clinical trials and clinical research projects.

About this Opportunity

Reporting to the Clinical Research Manager, the Research & Implementation RN will utilize clinical technical ability, operational knowledge of the University of Washington, a firm understanding of the clinical research process, and an ability to integrate this knowledge with research priorities to implement and support program goals. The CTU supports a diverse portfolio of clinical research studies with a broad reach of diseases and patient populations across early to late phase clinical trials, and both drug and device interventional studies.

On-site work across multiple sites in and around Seattle may be required, with occasional telework permitted.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Research Procedures & Patient Care - 50%

  • Provide nursing care to research participants, including conducting examinations, monitor and administer treatments and/or medications in accordance with research protocol compliance, and evaluate outcomes of patient participation in research studies.
  • Coordinate and schedule complex research procedures and clinical research activities in accordance with research protocol and institutional requirements.
  • Perform procedures including IV placement, blood draws, vital signs, electrocardiograms, and other clinical and non-clinical assessments as delegated or required by the research protocol.
  • Administer investigational medications, and perform patient assessments during clinic and study visits to determine presence of side effects; notifies Principal Investigators and overseeing physicians of findings/issues.
  • Provide patient education and medical information to study participants to ensure understanding of proper medication dosage, administration, disease monitoring and treatment.
  • Identify appropriate subjects for participation in research and in conjunction with the PI, determine eligibility for study inclusion.
  • Screen, recruit, consent, enroll, and track study participants in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • In coordination and under the delegation of the PI, provide ongoing and follow up care to research participants as needed for protocol adherence and maintaining appropriate clinical care.
  • Meticulous and compliant documentation of medical and research data in patient charts and research records to capture protocol requirements.

Study Coordination & Collaboration - 20%

  • Coordinate with and assist the Clinical Research Manager, research staff, faculty, and clinical service line staff in the performance of clinical research activities and processes within UW Medicine clinical care facilities, and UW Cardiology clinical research facilities.
  • Serve as the liaison between clinical and research teams, and as a representative of the CTU research team to UW Medicine and clinical research staff and advocate of clinical research integration with clinical service line teams, stakeholders, and processes.
  • Provide study visit and research activity coverage and additional project support to ensure continuity of research as needed to ensure continuity and avoid disruption to trial activities and research participant care and follow up.

Research Implementation - 20%

  • Responsible for standardizing and initiating clinical and research implementation processes before a Research Coordinator is assigned to the study, and supporting and collaborating with assigned Research Coordinators to activate new trials in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate and oversee implementation processes with stakeholders and internal departments, including clinical and research service line start-up activities, obtaining imaging and clinical test certifications and approvals, drafting clinical and research procedure order forms.
  • Provide support and guidance to the CTU pre-award team with regards to identifying and addressing clinical feasibility issues during study start-up.
  • In collaboration with study startup staff and research coordinators, this position will assess, plan, and drive implementation of new clinical research studies for Cardiology.
  • Along with the study startup team and Research Manager, this position will support identifying and implementing standard practices for new study startup, and serve as the primary liaison between research and clinical service line teams during the research implementation process.

  • Support and oversee development of collaboration with the CTU pre-award team and Research Coordinator

Project Management & Special Projects - 10%

  • Maintain oversight of assigned projects and providing support to ensure trials are successful
  • Under physician oversight, train new research staff to perform certain procedures for research purposes, including to perform vital signs, complete electrocardiograms.
  • Support quality assurance initiatives such as preceptorship mentors for new research staff, and conducting internal audit and data quality reviews

 

Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in nursing or a relevant field AND two (2) years of experience at the Registered Nurse 1 – Research level.
  • Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.
  • Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Washington

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of demonstrated experience in industry sponsored interventional clinical trials research coordination OR three years of increasingly responsible experience in complex research projects involving human subject
  • Clinical experience working in cardiology or similar fast paced field is preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills demonstrating diplomatic and tactful professionalism, proven organizational skills, and ability to manage many complex, high volume projects simultaneously
  • Demonstrated experience as a self-starter with an ability to work independently, with limited guidance, and in novelty.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills, adaptability, proactiveness, and a strong emphasis on process improvement.
  • Experience and interest in training and mentoring new and junior clinical research staff, and building collaborative partnerships across clinical and research stakeholders
  • Experience building and maintaining effective partnerships across teams, and providing effective support and guidance to research support staff and clinical service lines.

About the Team:
The CTU provides investigator support on all aspects of heart and vascular disease human subject research for industry sponsored interventional clinical trials, investigator-initiated research, and government and non-profit funded projects. The CTU supports and manages human subjects research coordination, regulatory compliance, and financial oversight to ensure efficient and high quality compliant end-to-end execution of studies and projects within our portfolio. The Research & Implementation RN will bridge the gap between research and direct patient care to support clinical trial operations across Cardiology CTU’s portfolio.

Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

Pay Range Minimum:

$85,188.00 annual

Pay Range Maximum:

$160,992.00 annual
