Sentara Medical Group is currently seeking a Site Chief Hospitalist for Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital in Virginia Beach, VA.
This position is a 1.0 FTE role comprised of two complementary leadership responsibilities: 0.5 FTE as the SVBGH Medical Director of Quality, Regulatory, & Safety and 0.5 FTE as the SVBGH Chief Hospitalist. The individual in this role will maintain the full scope of responsibilities outlined in each respective job description while operating in a combined capacity to support clinical excellence, operational performance, and physician leadership across SVBGH. Both components of the role report directly to the Market Chief Medical Officer.
SVBGH Medical Director of Quality, Regulatory, & Safety (50%)
The SVBGH Medical Director of Quality, Regulatory & Safety is the hospital’s physician leader responsible for driving clinical quality, patient safety, regulatory readiness, and medical staff performance. The QRS Medical Director ensures that the hospital delivers high-quality, evidence-based care, minimizes clinical variation, optimizes utilization, and maintains an engaged, high-performing medical staff. The role reports to the Market Chief Medical Officer and serves as a key member of the hospital’s senior leadership team. This leader acts as the clinical bridge between hospital administration, medical staff, and the broader health system.
Serves as the Physician Leader for Quality, Safety and Regulatory Accreditation at SVBGH. Supports the Market CMO and the Market QRS team with the market QRS activities.
Leads the CPI (Clinical Performance Improvement) teams, medical staff, and key stakeholders to achieve goals for CPI and reliability metrics (including analysis, planning, reporting, communication etc.). Coordinates local strategies and oversees data validation for quality programs such as CMS 5 Stars, P4P, Anthem Q Hip, Leapfrog etc. Partners with key stakeholders to develop strategy, and implementation plan for new or enhanced clinical programs or initiatives.
Physician Leader for hospital performance improvement to achieve Safety goals and High‑Reliability culture. Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements and standards (i.e., DNV, CMS, VDH etc.) across medical staff and hospital functions.
Leads physician engagement, communication, and leadership development for physicians and APPs. Supports the Market CMO in medical staff governance. Other duties assigned by the Market CMO.

SVBGH Chief Hospitalist (50%)
Responsibilities:
1. Collaborates with hospital administration leadership and SMG in defining, developing and implementing strategy, goals and objectives for their Hospital Medicine program. Provides leadership and guidance to program activities and assures timely accomplishment of defined goals while maximizing the effective use of resources.
2. Available to serve on appropriate strategic and operational committees in order to provide direction and expertise as needed.
3. In conjunction with the CMO:
a. Ensures superior clinical and operational performance management within the facility
b. Develops and implements staffing models
c. Develop and implement co-management agreements with ED and specialty providers
d. Leads efforts to optimize communication with nursing, ICMs, and specialties.
4. In conjunction with the Director of Medical and Business Operations and Senior Director, Operations:
a. Participate in the recruitment of professionals, participating in the selection interview and selection process.
b. Development and implementation of clinical and operational training
d. Participates in the development of performance measures
d. Ensures appropriate documentation and coding among providers.
e. Responsible for personnel management of hospitalist staff, to include recruiting, interviewing, hiring, orientation, supervision, annual performance appraisals, and monitoring professional growth and development.
f. Directs the efficient and cost-effective management of the SMG Division of Hospital Medicine. Supports and implements SMG policies and procedures.
g. Provides professional input into the development of clinical protocols/pathways and order sets relevant to the practice of Hospital Medicine.
h. Coordinates the planning and provision of continuing education related to Hospital Medicine, in accordance with SMG policies and procedures.
i. Serves as a resource for medical staff, clinicians and the community regarding Hospital Medicine practice and provision of care
j. Participate in professional activities including association meetings, seminars, workshops, symposia, and review of current professional literature.
k. Responsible for scheduling and coverage for hospitalist shifts and approval of paid time off for hospitalist staff.
l. Responsible for participation in policies and procedures for compliance with DNV and other regulatory agencies and application of consistent quality patient care standards.
m. Assure patient continuity of care through excellent communication with patients’ primary care physicians and other referring physicians.
n. Coordinates hospitalists’ participation on various hospital committees.
o. Responsible for enhancing referral base and growth of Hospital Medicine through communication and marketing efforts within the physician community.
p. Responsible for monitoring patient and referring physician satisfaction and addressing any issues or complaints about the hospitalist service.
q. Chair regularly scheduled meetings to maintain and enhance communication flow and address necessary concerns for the department.
r. Maintain knowledge of current changes and trends affecting hospitalist programs.
s. Responsible for making adjustments to program structure and delivery of patient care as changes occur in health care industry.
t. Demonstrate knowledge and support for the mission vision and values of SMG and Sentara.
5. In collaboration with the Manager, Business Operations and Senior Director, Operations:
a. Monitors financial status and progress, assessing efficiency and growth potential of the program on an ongoing basis.
b. Regularly updates the Chief Medical Officer and/or hospital leadership on the group’s financial performance.
c. Participate in regularly scheduled meetings with Chief Medical Officer to address necessary current clinical and/or departmental issues.
d. Serves as a spokesperson and ambassador for the SMG Division of Hospital Medicine.
e. By example, leads the team in a culture of clinical excellence and exemplary service to patients and other physicians.
f. Serves on the Sentara Hospital Medicine High Performance Team.
