Job Summary

Salary: £31,000 - £35,000 per annum, plus night shift allowance (dependent on experience)
Location: 33 Grosvenor Place, London, SW1X 7HY
Contract: Permanent, Full-time

Shift Pattern:
This role operates on a two-week rotating night shift pattern, working three 13-hour shifts per week. Shifts will be scheduled between 7:00pm–8:00am and 8:00pm–9:00am.

The rota pattern is as follows:

• Week 1: Sunday, Monday and Friday night shifts
• Week 2: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night shifts

Saturday night shifts are not included as part of this role’s scheduled rota.

What are we looking for?

Cleveland Clinic London are looking for a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) with good scientific background to work night shifts to complement our existing (MLA) team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a high-quality diagnostic service within a leading healthcare organisation.

In this role, you will support Registered Biomedical Scientists (BMS) in the preparation and processing of pathology samples across a range of laboratory areas. You will follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), maintain laboratory standards, and assist with specimen sorting, registration onto the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and analyser maintenance.

The role involves processing a variety of clinical samples, including blood, cerebrospinal fluid, urine, faeces, sputum, tissues, and other specimens, while working collaboratively with pathology staff, hospital teams, porters, drivers, and couriers.

What will your duties include?

• To book patient details and test requests on the pathology computer system.
• To receive specimens for investigations and prepare specimens for laboratory testing according to defined protocols.
• To ensure that specimen and request form details are correct and discuss ambiguous test requests with senior scientists or clinicians.
• To prepare samples for a wide range of tests.
• To participate when required in laboratory bench work or automated analysis following standard operating procedures.
• To communicate any difficulties, accidents or incidents to a section leader promptly.
• To enter test results on pathology computer system.
• To observe the departmental quality control policies.
• To package biological samples for testing at external centres in accordance with handling regulations for biohazard materials.
• To avoid contamination with infectious materials, reporting any leakages to senior staff and strictly following the departmental Health and Safety Rules.
• To replace stocks of consumables and reagents when required and inform the Section Leader if back-up stocks are low.
• To undertake routine cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment and benches.

What we need from you?

• Good basic education to GCSE Level (Essential)
• Willing to undergo relevant laboratory training in accordance with ISO15189. (Essential)
• Some experience working in Clinical research, Educational or diagnostic laboratory (Essential)
• Experience of working in a clinical setting (Essential)
• Degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent. (Desirable)
• Interest in working to higher level of qualification such as gaining HCPC registration (Desirable)
• Experience of working in a relevant routine laboratory (Desirable)
• Experience in working in a hospital setting (Desirable)
• Knowledge of working with EPIC systems or Laboratory LIMS (Desirable)
