We're looking for a Lead AI Engineer to help build the next generation of AI-powered experiences, platforms, and intelligent workflows. This is a hands-on technical leadership role for someone who loves solving hard problems, building production-grade systems, and turning emerging AI capabilities into real business outcomes. You'll work at the intersection of software engineering, AI, product development, and platform architecture—helping teams move from "what if?" to production. One week you might be designing agentic workflows, another optimizing large-scale retrieval systems, integrating AI into enterprise platforms, or evaluating the latest advances in foundation models.
If you're energized by new technology but grounded enough to know that reliability, security, scalability, and business value matter, we'd love to talk.
What You'll Do
Build AI That Actually Gets Used
Design and deliver AI-powered capabilities that solve meaningful business problems.
Develop solutions using large language models, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), autonomous agents, semantic search, and other modern AI techniques.
Own technical architecture from prototype through production deployment.
Create reusable platform capabilities that accelerate future AI development.
Lead Through Engineering Excellence
Serve as a technical leader and trusted advisor across multiple teams.
Mentor engineers and help raise the overall technical bar.
Drive engineering best practices around architecture, testing, deployment, observability, and operational excellence.
Conduct design and code reviews while helping teams navigate complex technical decisions.
Explore What's Next
Evaluate emerging AI technologies, frameworks, and approaches.
Rapidly prototype new ideas and determine where they can create real value.
Bring a practical mindset to innovation—separating hype from opportunity.
Help define the organization's long-term AI engineering strategy.
Build for Scale
Design cloud-native systems capable of supporting enterprise-scale usage.
Optimize performance, reliability, scalability, and operational costs.
Develop integration patterns connecting AI capabilities to enterprise systems, knowledge sources, APIs, and workflows.
Help establish standards and foundations that enable many teams to build on top of AI safely and efficiently.
Champion Responsible AI
Ensure solutions meet security, privacy, compliance, and governance requirements.
Define evaluation strategies that measure quality, accuracy, safety, and business impact.
Help establish best practices for AI observability, monitoring, and risk management.
Use your skills to make an impact
What We're Looking For
Required
8+ years of software engineering experience.
3+ years building or leading production AI/ML solutions.
Strong experience with large language models, AI orchestration frameworks, vector search, RAG, and prompt engineering.
Proficiency in Python and at least one additional modern programming language, preferrably C#/.Net
Experience building cloud-native applications in Azure, AWS, or GCP.
Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals, system design, APIs, CI/CD, testing, and DevSecOps.
Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical initiatives and influence across teams.
Nice to Have
Experience building agentic or autonomous AI systems.
Experience developing reusable AI platforms and shared services.
Familiarity with model evaluation frameworks, fine-tuning, or advanced ML techniques.
Experience building developer productivity or AI-assisted engineering solutions.
Experience operating in regulated or highly governed environments.
Open-source contributions, patents, technical publications, or conference speaking experience.
You'll Be Successful Here If You...
Get excited about building things that don't exist yet.
Can move comfortably between architecture diagrams, source code, and executive conversations.
Know when to innovate and when to simplify.
Enjoy mentoring other engineers and helping teams succeed.
Care as much about outcomes as you do technology.
Have a healthy skepticism of buzzwords and a passion for delivering real value.
Why This Role?
You'll have the opportunity to influence the direction of AI across an entire enterprise, work with cutting-edge technologies, solve genuinely difficult technical challenges, and help define how AI capabilities are built, governed, and scaled for years to come.
In short: you'll help build the platforms and capabilities that other teams will depend on to bring AI into their products, workflows, and everyday work.
Travel: While this is a remote position, occasional travel to Humana's offices for training or meetings may be required.
