Advanced Practice Registered Nurse - Ophthalmology, Oculoplastic Reconstructive Surgery (Full Time)

The Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) delivers medical care to a wide variety of patients. The ARNP is also examines and treats patients independently and in autonomous collaboration with other health care professionals. Ensures proper illness and injury care and disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. May prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests. Advises patients about continuing care.  

 

1. Performs and documents complete physical examinations and comprehensive health histories.
2. Functions independently to perform age-appropriate history and physical for patients.
3. Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient’s age-specific needs.
4. Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities
5. Implements interventions to support the patient to regain or maintain physiologic stability.
6. Assists with the provision of care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations.
7. Monitors the effectiveness of interventions.
8. Facilitates the patient’s transition within and between health care settings, e.g. admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
9. Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals.
10. Facilitates staff, patient and family decision making by providing educational tools.
11. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS  

Education: 

• Master’s Degree  

 

Certification and Licensing: 

• Graduate of master’s in science in Nursing with approved ARNP Curriculum or higher  

• Florida Licensure as ARNP from Florida Board of Nursing  

• Board Certification as ARNP from nationally accredited organization such as American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP)  

 

Experience:   

• Minimum 2 years of relevant experience

• Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail. 

• Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.

Department Specific Functions 

Role Rationale (Oculoplastics-Specific) 

This APRN role is designed to provide clinically appropriate care delivery, coordination, and procedural support in areas that require medical licensure and carry liability constraints. The APRN functions as a physician extender to improve patient safety, continuity of care, clinic efficiency, and overall patient experience. This role is collaborative and does not function as an independent provider. 

Procedural & Clinic Support 

• Support procedural readiness and documentation. 
• Improve clinic throughput and physician efficiency. 

• Provide extended patient education and explanation of treatment plans. 

• Function in clinic as a physician extender (particularly for faculty without resident/fellow support). 

• Set up minor chair procedures (prep/drape, botox syringes, cosmetic lasers, consents). 

• Ensure pathology, imaging, and labs are available and reviewed prior to visits. 

•  Pre-charting for provider charts and triage of patients who are not OCP patients to other services (i.e. blepharitis, dry eye) 

 

Aesthetics & Procedural Care (Liability Responsibilities) 

• Pre-procedure preparation: cleaning and prepping treatment areas; application of numbing agents. 
• Post-procedure care: removal of numbing agents; application of aloe, Aquaphor, sunscreen; post-procedure cleaning. 
• Post-procedure follow-up: direct patient follow-up after injections, lasers, or minor procedures. 
• Laser and ocular safety: certification compliance, operation of laser equipment, application of numbing drops, placement of corneal or metal eye shields. 

Medication & Clinical Management 

• Prescribing and medication management within APRN scope. 
• Medication reconciliation and refills. 
• Peer-to-peer insurance discussions. 
• Management of prescriptions and documentation. 

Oncology & Complex Care Coordination 

• Track imaging, labs, and surveillance testing. 
• Request and coordinate scans. 
• Ensure multidisciplinary continuity of care. 
• Prevent loss to follow-up in high-risk patients. 

• Facilitate multidisciplinary care coordination, especially for oncology patients. 

• Assist in arranging care across UHealth services (rad onc, ENT, neurosurgery, oncology). 

• Coordinate joint cases and multidisciplinary scheduling. 

• Prepare cases for tumor board/MOBS presentation. 

• Assist with longitudinal tracking of patients, especially oncology patients. 

 

Administrative Medical Responsibilities 

• Worker’s compensation documentation. 
• FMLA paperwork. 
• Completion of provider-level documentation. 
• Support prior authorizations and clinical paperwork. 

Tepezza Program Coordination 

• Primary contact for Tepezza paperwork and coordination. 
• Treatment tracking and documentation support. 

Care Coordination & Continuity 

• Longitudinal patient tracking. 
• Post-procedure and ongoing follow-up. 
• Facilitate referrals and multidisciplinary coordination.
