Great housekeeping departments do not run themselves. They run because someone with real leadership presence, sharp operational instincts, and a genuine commitment to standards is driving the team every single day. Someone who inspects with purpose, coaches with respect, communicates with clarity, and holds the department together when the Executive Housekeeper is away. Someone who takes personal ownership of the guest experience and understands that a clean, well-maintained hotel is not just a standard to meet but a promise to keep.
We are looking for an experienced, people-first Assistant Housekeeping Manager to join our team at The Colony Hotel. If you are a hospitality professional who is ready to step into a leadership role with real responsibility, lead a team you can be proud of, and grow within a world-class property and organization, we want to hear from you.
About the Role
As the Assistant Housekeeping Manager, you are the right hand of the Executive Housekeeper and one of the most important leaders in the housekeeping department. You will supervise and coordinate the daily activities of the housekeeping team, conduct room and property inspections, train and develop associates, manage scheduling and assignments, and step in as the acting department leader whenever the Executive Housekeeper is off property.
This role also carries Manager on Duty responsibilities, meaning there will be shifts where you are the senior leader on property for the entire hotel. That requires sound judgment, calm authority, clear communication, and the confidence to make decisions and handle situations independently when they arise.
You will be working closely with the Front Desk, Maintenance, and other departments throughout every shift to ensure room readiness, resolve guest concerns, and keep operations running smoothly. The housekeeping department touches every guest stay, and the Assistant Housekeeping Manager is at the center of making sure that touch reflects the quality this property is known for.
A flexible schedule is required for this role. Availability to work varying days and shifts is essential, and weekend availability is non-negotiable given the nature of hotel housekeeping operations.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Directly supervising and coordinating the daily activities of the housekeeping department in the absence of the Executive Housekeeper, including room attendants, laundry attendants, housemen, and public area associates
- Inspecting guest rooms, public spaces, back-of-house areas, and all housekeeping zones daily to ensure cleanliness and sanitation standards are consistently met, completing inspection sheets accurately and thoroughly
- Reporting deficiencies in guest room physical condition to the General Manager, Executive Housekeeper, or Maintenance Supervisor as appropriate and following up to ensure resolution and room readiness
- Assisting the Executive Housekeeper in completing the weekly housekeeping schedule to meet the needs of the hotel and its guests while managing labor in line with financial objectives
- Assisting with daily room assignments and special project assignments for all housekeeping staff
- Communicating room status changes clearly and in a timely manner throughout the shift to Front Desk and relevant departments
- Interviewing applicants, orienting new hires, and conducting ongoing training for all housekeeping associates to increase job knowledge, skill level, and performance standards
- Coaching and counseling associates to encourage positive behaviors, correct performance deficiencies, and support continued growth and development
- Promoting teamwork and positive associate morale in all situations and interactions throughout the department
- Assisting in cleaning guest rooms as needed based on business volume and timing demands
- Assisting housekeepers and housemen in maintaining clean, orderly storerooms and properly stocked housekeeping carts
- Ensuring laundry room procedures and sanitation standards are being carried out consistently; performing laundry duties as required based on business volume
- Inspecting the grooming and attire of all housekeeping staff and addressing any deficiencies professionally and promptly
- Interpreting and enforcing company policies and procedures, ensuring all associates comply with safety programs, the Associate Handbook, and local house policies
- Participating in monthly department meetings to review new procedures, share updates, and solicit input from the team
- Working with the Executive Housekeeper and Front Office team to maintain the lost-and-found program in accordance with established procedures
- Maintaining energy management programs and inspecting for adherence as it relates to the housekeeping department
- Performing Manager on Duty shifts and responsibilities as assigned, exercising sound judgment and serving as the senior leader on property during those times
- Following all safety and security procedures and immediately reporting accidents, injuries, and unsafe work conditions to the appropriate manager or HR
- Communicating effectively with other departments and managers using clear, professional verbal and written communication
- Maintaining confidentiality of proprietary information and protecting company assets at all times
- Performing other duties as assigned by the Executive Housekeeper or General Manager
What We’re Looking For
- A confident, people-first leader who earns the respect of their team through consistency, fairness, and genuine investment in the people they lead
- Strong operational instincts and the ability to inspect, identify issues, and make good decisions in real time under the pressure of a busy hotel operation
- The ability to coach and hold standards with respect; you give clear, direct feedback and you follow through
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills across all levels of the organization, from front-line associates to hotel leadership
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously throughout a fast-moving shift
- A calm, decisive presence when serving in a Manager on Duty capacity; guests and associates look to you for leadership and you deliver it
- A genuine commitment to guest satisfaction and the understanding that every housekeeping decision ultimately reflects on the guest experience
- Flexible schedule availability including varying days, shifts, weekends, and holidays without exception
- Bilingual in English and Spanish is strongly preferred and will be a meaningful advantage in this role
Qualifications
- A 2 or 4 year degree in business, hospitality management, or a related field is preferred; equivalent experience will be considered
- Minimum of 1 year of previous supervisory experience in a housekeeping or related hospitality environment, or demonstrated leadership ability in a comparable role
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; bilingual in Spanish is strongly preferred
- Ability to function in a Manager on Duty capacity as necessary
- Ability to perform all physical requirements of the role with or without reasonable accommodation
- Flexible schedule with availability to work varying days and shifts including weekends and holidays
- Working knowledge of housekeeping operations, sanitation standards, and health and safety compliance
- Proficiency with basic computer tools for scheduling, communication, and reporting
Physical Requirements
This is a highly active, physical role that requires standing for up to 8 consecutive hours and moving throughout the property for the full duration of every shift. You should be comfortable bending, twisting, lifting, squatting, reaching overhead and below the knee, and climbing ladders and stairs to conduct thorough inspections and support the team operationally. This role requires the ability to move, lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 30 lbs. Inspection duties include bending, reaching, and twisting to examine tubs, toilets, showers, under beds, under and behind furniture, under sinks, and all other areas of a guest room or public space. Moving some furniture such as chairs, tables, and mattresses may also be required. All physical requirements can be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
Who Thrives Here
The Assistant Housekeeping Managers who truly excel in this role are the ones who lead from the front. They inspect every room like a guest is checking in within the hour. They coach an associate through a performance issue with the same patience and clarity they would want for themselves. They step into the Manager on Duty role with confidence and handle what needs to be handled without waiting for direction. They communicate proactively with the Front Desk before a room situation becomes a guest complaint.
They also build a team culture that people want to be part of. They promote teamwork, celebrate great work, and hold the standard firmly but with genuine respect for the people carrying it out. They understand that a well-led housekeeping department is one of the most important things a hotel can have, and they show up every shift ready to be that leader.
If you are someone who is ready for the responsibility that comes with this role and has the experience and the character to carry it, this is your opportunity.
