POSITION SUMMARY
The Field Service Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining customer-owned and company-owned heavy equipment at branch locations and customer job sites. This position requires strong technical and mechanical ability, professionalism, and a customer-focused mindset while working independently and as part of a team.
This position is classified as a safety-sensitive role. The technician must perform all duties with a strong commitment to safety, including safe operation of company vehicles, tools, and equipment, and full compliance with company safety policies, DOT regulations, and all applicable laws.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Repair and maintain heavy and compact construction equipment, including hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems in the field and at branch facilities
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues using schematics, service manuals, diagnostic tools, and software
- Communicate professionally with customers regarding equipment condition, repairs, and recommendations
- Accurately document labor time, job notes, repair notes, parts usage, inspections, and repair details per company policy in the company's operating systems
- Access manufacturer websites for service manuals, software updates, diagnostics, and warranty documentation
- Identify and report additional repair or maintenance needs to management
- Capture required images and videos of repairs and failed components
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and inspections of company service trucks and tools
- Manage inventory of new and used parts on assigned service truck
- Operate company vehicles in a safe, responsible manner at all times
- Obey all traffic laws, DOT regulations, and company vehicle policies while driving
- Report vehicle safety issues, incidents, or violations immediately per company policy
- Work collaboratively with technicians, parts personnel, and management
- Follow all safety policies, procedures, and job site requirements
- Participate in safety documentation, inspections, and corrective actions as required
- Assist with equipment setup, inspections, and preventative maintenance
- Attend required training and manufacturer schooling
- Perform other duties as assigned by management
Requirements
Skills & Experience
- Strong mechanical aptitude with experience in heavy and compact equipment repair
- Working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and powertrain components
- Ability to use diagnostic equipment, laptops, and manufacturer software (training provided as needed)
- Ability to read and interpret hydraulic and electrical schematics
- Experience using diagnostic software, laptops, and electronic service tools
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Ability and willingness to learn and stay current with new equipment, systems, and technologies
- Basic computer skills for time entry, service documentation, communication, and parts lookup
- Good communication skills and a professional attitude
Physical, Licensing, Tools, & Safety Requirements
- Valid driver’s license and ability to meet company and General Liability driving requirements
- Must pass a DOT physical
- Must maintain a safe driving record
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull parts and components weighing approximately 10–75 lbs
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and reaching
- Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and access all areas of equipment
- Forklift operation required
- Ability to travel as needed for service calls and training
- Must be able to perform at customer job sites, branch facilities, and outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Must be able to handle regular exposure to heavy machinery, noise, grease, and moving equipment
- Must supply and maintain personal tools required to perform the job
