Why RTI

RTI International is an independent, scientific research institute dedicated to improving the human condition. Our vision is to address the world's most critical problems with technical and science-based solutions in pursuit of a better future. Clients rely on us to answer questions that demand an objective and multidisciplinary approach—one that integrates expertise across social, statistical, data, and laboratory sciences, engineering, and other technical disciplines to solve the world’s most challenging problems. We believe in the promise of science and technical solutions, and we push ourselves every day to deliver on that promise for the good of people, communities, and businesses in the US and around the world. If you are looking for the opportunity to make a real difference, RTI is the place for you.

About the Hiring Group

The Center of GenOmics and Applied Public Health at RTI International has an opening for an experienced Genomics Analyst focused on processing, quality control, and analysis of genomics, metabolomics, proteomics, and/or data generated by collaborative research networks. Working with investigators, laboratory partners, and multidisciplinary project teams, the analyst will analyze and interpret complex datasets and contribute to research on human health and disease. The ideal candidate will have a master’s degree in a relevant discipline, strong programming and analytical skills, experience with high-dimensional biomedical data, a solid foundation in human genetics, and experience applying statistical and computational methods to the analysis of omics data. This position is available in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, or remotely.

What You'll Do

  • Process and quality-check metabolomics, proteomics, and/or data generated using various platforms by commercial providers or university laboratories, including data tables generated by vendors or laboratories and raw instrument files, using platform-appropriate workflows for data cleaning, filtering, normalization, missing-data assessment, and batch-effect evaluation.
  • Implement and troubleshoot platform-appropriate workflows to convert raw instrument data into quantified metabolite or protein data, including feature detection, identification or annotation, and quantification as appropriate to the assay and in consultation with laboratory partners.
  • Develop, maintain, and document reproducible processing and analysis workflows; produce analysis-ready datasets, quality-control summaries, and data dictionaries.
  • Coordinate with laboratory and data-management partners to receive and validate data deliveries, reconcile sample identifiers and metadata, harmonize datasets across batches or studies, and resolve data-quality issues.
  • Conduct exploratory and statistical analyses under the guidance of project investigators, and support integration of metabolomics and proteomics data with other omics, clinical, phenotype, and environmental data.
  • Support and/or lead the center’s broader genomic analyses as needed, including genotype data quality control and imputation, genome-wide association studies, and integration of genetic data with metabolomic and proteomic data (e.g., protein or metabolite quantitative trait locus mapping).
  • Prepare tables, figures, methods descriptions, and technical reports; contribute to and/or lead manuscripts and communicate processing decisions and analytical results to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Support proposal development by leading or providing input on technical sections, such as data-processing workflows, analytical approaches, and associated resource needs.

What You'll Need

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Statistics, or a related discipline, with 6 years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience managing large biomedical datasets, validating sample and feature metadata, and analyzing high-dimensional data.
  • Hands-on experience processing metabolomics, proteomics, and/or omic data, including raw instrument data, with a strong understanding of platform-specific quality control, preprocessing, and generation of analysis-ready datasets.
  • Working knowledge of bioinformatics tools and statistical methods for omics data processing, analysis, visualization, and biological interpretation.
  • Foundational knowledge of human genetics and genomics, including genetic variation, genome builds and annotation, linkage disequilibrium, population structure and genetic ancestry, and common genomic data formats (e.g., VCF, PLINK, FASTQ/BAM).
  • Expertise in R and/or Python, including writing clear, reusable, and well-documented code.
  • Experience working in a Unix/Linux environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate respectfully and effectively with colleagues across disciplines and research teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • To qualify, candidates must be legally authorized to work int he United States and should not require, now or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B visa status, etc.)

Preferred qualifications

  • Proficiency in working in high-performance computing and/or cloud computing environments, particularly AWS or Microsoft Azure.
  • Experience with commercial proteomics platforms, such as Olink, including interpretation of vendor-provided quality-control metrics and processing of delivered data, and familiarity with mass spectrometry-based metabolomics or proteomics workflows and upstream laboratory processes; wet-lab experience is helpful but not required.
  • Experience with both metabolomics and proteomics, cross-study harmonization, multi-omics integration, or pathway and enrichment analyses.
  • Experience with genetic analyses, such as genotype quality control and imputation, GWAS, QTL mapping (e.g., pQTL or mQTL), DNA methylation array processing, or RNA-seq analysis, using tools such as PLINK, SAIGE, or Bioconductor packages.
  • Experience using version control, such as Git, and workflow-management tools to support reproducible analyses.
  • Experience with human subjects research data.
