Description
The snapshot
Staffstream is hiring a Retail Drafter / Designer for an Australian acrylic fabrication business that makes custom acrylic products for retail, commercial, and industrial clients: display cases, curved components, laser-cut panels, signage, and individual parts. Everything is made in-house using laser cutting, saw cutting, routing, and assembly.
You'd sit between the sales team and the production team, reporting to the Production Manager / Director. Many client and agency concepts arrive with sizes, thicknesses, or details that can't be built as drawn, and machine operators currently stop production to prepare files themselves. Your job is to close that gap: turn each concept into a drawing the client can approve and a drawing the production team can build from directly.
This is a technical drafting role, not a concept or rendering role. The business handles around 100 to 150 jobs a week. Most are variations on a theme, like five-sided display cases in different sizes or materials, with fewer complex custom builds. All machines cut flat, so production drawings are 2D, and 3D views are only for client visualization. If you enjoy precise, high-volume technical work, this is built for you. This role is open to candidates based in the Philippines.
What you will actually do
Turn concepts into buildable designs
- Read customer sketches, briefs, reference images, and existing drawings, and work out what the customer actually wants.
- Check each concept against what can really be built, using the business's actual acrylic materials, available thicknesses, and sheet sizes.
- Adjust the design where needed, for example swapping an unavailable 8.5mm acrylic for 6mm or 10mm, or reducing a height to fit a standard sheet, and show the client the trade-off in a drawing.
- Ask the right questions before you draw, such as load, weight, spans, and support, to cut revisions and avoid costly remakes.
Customer proofs
- Produce clear, professional proof drawings so customers can approve dimensions, materials, finishes, and overall appearance before production starts.
- Include perspective views, component placement, material specifications, customer colours, and overall dimensions, presented so a non-technical customer can follow them.
- Work customer feedback and revisions into the proofs accurately and quickly.
Production drawings
- Produce production-ready drawing sets with perspective and exploded views, window measurements, component placement, material specifications, dimensions, and clear instructions for laser cutting, saw cutting, routing, and assembly.
- Specify the business's actual materials, thicknesses, and construction methods on every drawing, so the fabrication team never has to re-interpret anything.
- Follow the business's drawing standards and notation so every output is usable without clarification.
- Work in your preferred CAD or design software, export clear PDFs for approval and production, and break 3D designs into flat 2D panels for cutting.
Volume and organization
- Manage a live job queue across many projects at different stages, without losing track of revisions, pending approvals, or production-ready files.
- Keep well-organized digital files for every active and completed job, accessible to the production team and the Director.
- During quieter periods, build a library of standard components and parametric templates, such as five-sided boxes at available sheet sizes and thicknesses, to speed up repeat work.
Working with the team, and where this role goes
- Work closely with the production team to understand fabrication processes and material behavior, so your drawings reflect how acrylic is actually built.
- Join client calls on Teams to understand requirements first-hand.
- Help improve the business's drawing standards and templates over time.
- Over time, take ownership of the drafting function, including guiding future drafters on material and machine limitations.
What you need to bring
- Strong proficiency in a 2D/3D CAD or design tool, such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, SketchUp, or Adobe Illustrator, applied to technical, production, or product drawing, not only graphic design or marketing work.
- The ability to produce simple 3D views for clients and break a 3D design into a series of dimensioned 2D panels.
- Demonstrated experience in technical drafting, product design, or production drawing for a fabrication, manufacturing, or trades business, with a practical understanding of how a production team uses a drawing.
- The ability to interpret loose briefs (sketches, emails, reference images, and rough dimensions) and turn them into accurate, buildable drawing sets.
- High output and the ability to manage many jobs at once, with examples of working at that volume.
- Strong attention to detail in dimensioning, material specification, and drawing notation. Errors on a production drawing are costly to fix once cutting or assembly has started.
- The confidence to say when something can't be built, and offer a better option.
- A portfolio of your recent drafting work. Please include a copy of your updated portfolio with your application (a PDF or a link is fine). A copy is all we need, no access to your software or files.
Nice to have
- A background in acrylic, plastics, glass, sheet metal, or a similar fabricated-materials business. Knowing how acrylic is cut, bent, routed, and assembled will shorten your learning curve.
- Experience producing machine-ready files (such as DXF) for laser cutting or CNC routing. Not essential, as this can be learned on the job.
- Familiarity with laser cutting, saw cutting, routing, or similar CNC processes, and what information they need from a drawing.
- Experience producing customer-facing proofs alongside internal production drawings, and switching comfortably between the two.
The setup
- This role is open to Philippines-based candidates.
- Full-time, Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm Australian Eastern time (AEST/AEDT), including a 1-hour lunch break. Fully remote.
- Staffstream provides your work-from-home equipment.
What's in it for you
- HMO health cover, with one dependent covered for free.
- Group life insurance.
- Paid leave credits.
- Work-from-home equipment provided.
You're employed compliantly under Philippine law: a proper local employment contract, your taxes handled correctly, and all your government-mandated benefits (SSS, PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG) plus 13th month pay. That means real security and peace of mind, not a loose freelance arrangement. Everything is above board and looked after for you.
