Are you interested in a professional library role focused on Children’s Services?

The City of San Bernardino is seeking a Librarian I/II to provide services, support library collections, develop programs and outreach for the community!

About the City:
As a future member of our team, you’ll be joining a city with deep roots, cultural diversity, and exciting momentum. Located in the heart of Southern California’s Inland Empire, San Bernardino is the county seat and largest city in San Bernardino County, home to more than 222,000 residents. Its rich history — shaped by Native American, Mexican, and Spanish influences — continues to inspire the city’s evolving identity.

San Bernardino offers access to major transit corridors, natural beauty, and a wide range of housing and lifestyle options. It’s a place where public service careers are supported by a strong sense of community and purpose — and where motivated professionals can grow, contribute, and be part of something meaningful.

About the Position:
The City of San Bernardino is seeking a Librarian I/II to provide professional library services with a focus on Children’s Services at the Feldheym Central Library.
Responsibilities include overseeing children’s programs, services, and activities, including the Summer Reading Program. The position works closely with the Library Program Coordinator, who oversees Young Adult Services, and coordinates with supervisors at the branch libraries to support consistent and effective library services.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Programming: Plan and present engaging activities, including story times, craft workshops, summer reading programs, and educational events for children from infancy through the preteen years.
  • Collection Management: Evaluate, select, and maintain books, digital resources, and other materials appropriate to the reading levels, developmental needs, and interests of young patrons.
  • Outreach and Partnerships: Conduct outreach to local schools, community groups, and parent organizations to build partnerships and promote early literacy.
  • Reference and Reader’s Advisory: Assist children, parents, and teachers with locating information, research materials, and age-appropriate reading selections.
  • Administration: Assist with budgeting, oversee support staff and volunteers as assigned, and evaluate the effectiveness of children’s services and programs.

Proposed Work Schedule:
M
onday through Thursday, four 10-hour shifts (4/10 schedule), with periodic adjusted schedules to accommodate Monday and Tuesday evening hours and Saturday assignments as needed for library programs, outreach, and community activities.

Note: Vacancy may be filled at the level of Librarian I or II based on the qualifications of the selected candidate.

The Ideal Candidate:

They communicate effectively, build positive relationships with schools and community groups, and work collaboratively with library staff, volunteers, and branch supervisors. English/Spanish bilingual skills are preferred.

A Day in the Life:
A day may begin with preparing for a children’s program or story time, then helping children, parents, and teachers find books, research materials, and other library resources. The Librarian selects and reviews materials for the children’s collection, plans upcoming activities such as the Summer Reading Program, and coordinates with the Library Program Coordinator and branch supervisors. The role may also include outreach to schools and community groups, supporting staff and volunteers, and reviewing program information to improve services. Work schedules may shift to accommodate evening programs and occasional Saturday activities.
