Purpose

The Quality Inspection Technician III–IV performs hands-on inspection, verification, and qualification activities supporting LPBF sub-assembly manufacturing and printer integration operations. The role verifies hardware and processes against engineering drawings, specifications, GD&T, work instructions, quality requirements, and applicable acceptance criteria.

This role performs complex dimensional, visual, functional, and configuration inspections using precision measurement equipment and calibrated inspection tools. The technician develops inspection methods and procedures, documents inspection results, identifies and supports resolution of non-conformances, supports qualification and verification activities, and provides accurate quality records for hardware acceptance and release.

The Quality Inspection Technician works closely with Sub-Assembly, Printer Integration, Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality Engineering, Supply Chain, and Operations to resolve quality issues, implement corrective actions, and improve manufacturing and inspection processes.

This position may be filled at the Technician III or Technician IV level based on demonstrated knowledge, experience, technical capability, independence, complexity of work, and technical leadership.

The Role

Sub-Assembly & Printer Integration Inspection

  • Perform in-process, final, verification, and qualification inspections of mechanical and electromechanical components and assemblies.
  • Inspect sub-assemblies and integrated printer hardware against drawings, specifications, GD&T, BOMs, work instructions, and acceptance criteria.
  • Verify critical dimensions, interfaces, alignment, fit, configuration, workmanship, and assembly conditions.
  • Perform inspections following assembly, installation, adjustment, repair, rework, or engineering changes.
  • Support inspection activities associated with printer integration, commissioning, qualification, and release.
  • Identify conditions that may affect machine performance, alignment, repeatability, reliability, or production readiness.
  • Determine appropriate inspection approaches based on engineering requirements, geometry, tolerances, interfaces, and intended use.

Metrology & Inspection

  • Perform complex dimensional and geometric inspections using calibrated manual tools, gauges, and precision measurement equipment.
  • Select appropriate inspection and measurement methods based on part geometry, tolerance requirements, and inspection objectives.
  • Perform measurements of components, sub-assemblies, interfaces, and integrated printer hardware.
  • Evaluate measurement results for accuracy, repeatability, and conformance to requirements.
  • Identify measurement conditions or sources of variation that could affect inspection accuracy or repeatability.
  • Verify inspection equipment is appropriately calibrated, controlled, and suitable for intended use.
  • Document measurement results and maintain traceability to applicable hardware and requirements.

Inspection Planning & Procedure Development

  • Create and improve inspection plans and inspection criteria from engineering drawings, CAD models, specifications, BOMs, and process requirements.
  • Develop inspection methods, checklists, work instructions, and standardized inspection procedures.
  • Establish inspection points, measurement methods, acceptance criteria, and objective evidence requirements for new or modified hardware.
  • Create and maintain inspection programs, templates, measurement routines, and inspection documentation.
  • Partner with Engineering and Manufacturing to develop practical, repeatable inspection methods that verify design intent and manufacturing requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve inspection efficiency, repeatability, measurement capability, and quality controls.
  • Update inspection methods as hardware, processes, or engineering requirements change.

Qualification & Verification

  • Perform and document inspections supporting machine, sub-assembly, process, and product qualification.
  • Generate inspection reports and objective evidence required for qualification and verification submissions.
  • Compile dimensional results, inspection records, photographs, certifications, and supporting documentation as required.
  • Support First Article Inspection and other formal hardware verification activities, including AS9102-based documentation where applicable.
  • Review inspection documentation for completeness, accuracy, traceability, and technical sufficiency.
  • Maintain traceability between inspection results, part numbers, serial numbers, revisions, work orders, hardware configuration, and engineering requirements.
  • Support engineering reviews and hardware release decisions with objective inspection data.

Nonconformance & Corrective Action

  • Identify, document, and communicate non-conforming hardware and process conditions.
  • Initiate or support NCRs, MRB activities, deviation requests, root-cause investigations, and other quality-system processes.
  • Provide objective inspection data to support disposition and corrective-action activities.
  • Determine appropriate inspection requirements following repair, rework, corrective action, or engineering changes.
  • Perform re-inspection and verify hardware following corrective actions.
  • Identify recurring failure modes and work with Quality Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering to improve process and inspection controls.
  • Support verification of corrective and preventive action effectiveness.
  • Escalate significant quality risks and unresolved technical issues as appropriate.

Supplier Quality & Supply Chain Support

  • Support investigation of supplier quality issues identified during manufacturing and inspection activities.
  • Provide objective inspection data to Supply Chain and Quality Engineering to support supplier corrective actions.
  • Support supplier corrective-action investigations and verification of corrective actions.
  • Identify recurring supplier quality issues and support cross-functional resolution.
  • Provide inspection requirements and acceptance criteria to support supplier communications and sourcing activities.
  • Support development of inspection requirements for new suppliers, components, and outsourced processes.

Quality Systems & Change Management

  • Use applicable QMS, ERP, MES, ticketing, or workflow systems to document inspection activities and quality issues.
  • Create and manage inspection-related change requests for drawings, inspection plans, procedures, tooling, and acceptance criteria.
  • Maintain configuration and revision traceability for inspection requirements and documentation.
  • Support controlled updates to quality procedures, inspection documentation, and standardized work.
  • Track quality and inspection actions through completion and maintain appropriate documentation.
  • Support internal audits, quality reviews, and applicable quality-system activities.

Quality Improvement

  • Analyze inspection results and recurring defects to identify opportunities for process improvement.
  • Work with Manufacturing Engineering and Quality Engineering to reduce defects, rework, escapes, inspection variability, and hardware release delays.
