#### About the opportunity

The rapid growth of 4K/8K streaming, immersive XR, and real-time telepresence is creating increasing demands on video compression and network capacity. At the same time, machine-vision applications such as drones, autonomous vehicles, and industrial inspection rely on high-quality video with low latency and minimal compression artefacts.

Efficient video encoding is essential for reducing bandwidth requirements, CDN costs, and energy consumption while preserving the visual details needed by AI-based perception systems and real-time services. As video demand continues to grow and data-centre emissions face increased regulatory attention, codec efficiency is becoming increasingly important for both sustainability and competitiveness.

Traditional video Quality of Experience (QoE) models are often resource-intensive and are typically applied after the video has been encoded. By enabling fast QoE estimation during the encoding process, encoding parameters can be adjusted to achieve the best possible quality for a given bitrate.

This thesis will investigate QoE-guided encoding decision-making and contribute to the development of more efficient video encoding technologies.

#### What you will do

During the thesis, you will:

  • Select and curate suitable video quality datasets that capture the effects of different encoding strategies.
  • Perform a comprehensive analysis of the selected datasets.
  • Evaluate state-of-the-art video encoding bitrate-control methods.
  • Assess the applicability of standardized video QoE models.
  • Develop an in-the-loop system that incorporates fast QoE estimation into the encoding process.
  • Implement and evaluate the solution for one video codec or encoder, such as VVC or HEVC/H.265.
  • Analyse the results and assess the potential of QoE-guided encoding for improving video quality and encoding efficiency.

#### The skills you bring

We are looking for candidates who:

  • Enjoy working closely with colleagues and collaborating towards common goals.
  • Have strong analytical skills and are eager to develop innovative solutions.
  • Have a sound understanding of good research practices.
  • Have knowledge of video streaming or media coding.
  • Are interested in algorithm development, experimentation, and testing.
  • Have strong programming skills in languages such as Python and C++.
  • Have excellent mathematical skills.
  • Are pursuing an MSc in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a related field.

When applying, please include a transcript of records showing your completed courses and grades.
