This Position reports to:

R&D Team Lead

Your role and responsibilities

Mine hoists are the most critical production unit in the underground mines. Payloads of ~70tons can be hoisted with 18m/s from ~1500m below surface.

In the future mining high payload solutions are planned to hoist from >2000m.

This thesis will address next generation mine hoists, with the goal to reduce energy usage and reduce the environmental impact.

Details:

  • Period: January 2027-June 2027, 5 months
  • Number of credits:  30 ECTS
  • Number of students for this thesis work: 1
  • Location: ABB Corporate Research (Västerås)

Goals:

  • Study focusing on how to simulate airflows and skip movements in a mine hoist using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics).
  • Simulate scenarios to evaluate how the air flow changes in the mine shaft, and how it impacts on the skips during production / hoisting.
  • Improve and extend existing simulation environment.
  • Evaluate and develop simplified models that can be used for advanced control.

Qualifications for the role

  • Master’s student in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics or similar
  • Knowledge in CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations
  • MATLAB / Simulink knowledge is advantageous
  • Knowledge in automatic control is advantageous.
