Overview
AMERICAN SYSTEMS is seeking a Senior Propulsion Engineer with a Bachelor's and 6 years of experience to provide comprehensive engineering support to the U.S. Coast Guard Surface Forces Logistics Center, helping modernize and sustain the Coast Guard’s aging fleet. This work directly supports the continued readiness, safety, and mission effectiveness of cutters and boats through critical modernization, sustainment, and lifecycle engineering efforts.
This role focuses on ship propulsion systems, machinery arrangements, technical documentation, and engineering trade studies that support vessel modernization and sustainment initiatives. The ideal candidate brings strong experience in marine mechanical systems, shipboard propulsion, and applicable commercial and regulatory standards. This position plays an important role in helping ensure cutter and boat systems remain safe, effective, and mission-ready.
Responsibilities
As a Senior Marine Propulsion Engineer you will:
Provide engineering and technical support for marine vessels, shipboard machinery, and associated mechanical systems. Responsibilities include design evaluation, documentation development, propulsion analysis, and support for modernization initiatives.
Marine Propulsion and Machinery Systems
- Provide technical support for the design, development, documentation, and evaluation of marine vessels, ship machinery, and related equipment
- Support engineering efforts involving power supply and propulsion systems
- Research, develop, and assess ship propulsion systems, including:
- diesel engines
- gas turbines
- diesel-electric systems
- propellers
- rudders
- thrusters
- gears
- shafts
- bearings
- seals
- noise and vibration considerations
- interfaces with dynamic positioning systems
- Apply engineering principles and technical analysis to support system design requirements and vessel modernization efforts
- Design, develop, and evaluate the operation of shipboard propulsion machinery
Technical Documentation and Design Support
- Develop system documentation and ship specifications
- Review and develop technical data packages
- Provide oversight for the development of machinery arrangements
- Support and conduct trade studies related to propulsion system configuration and associated components
- Apply knowledge of ABS, NVR, and commercial ship design rules and regulations
- Support engineering efforts in alignment with applicable design, safety, and compliance standards

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
- 6+ years of experience developing:
- ship propulsion systems
- propulsion control systems
- machinery arrangements
- weight assessments
- trade studies involving propulsion configurations and associated components
- Proficiency in Python, Data bricks, Power Apps, MTU DiaSys
- Strong knowledge of marine propulsion systems and shipboard mechanical equipment
- Experience supporting the design, development, and evaluation of vessel machinery systems
- Ability to develop and review technical documentation, specifications, and data packages
- Understanding of machinery arrangements, propulsion integration, and associated engineering analyses
Eligibility
- U.S. Citizenship is required for the purpose of obtaining and maintaining a U.S. security clearance

- Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance
- Active DoD security clearance at Secret or above highly desirable
