Description
.
The GIS Graduate Trainee will support the GIS team in collecting, managing, analyzing and visualizing geospatial data for the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project. The trainee will gain practical exposure to spatial data management, cartography and mapping, land and route information, remote sensing, field data collection, and health, safety, and environmental (HSE) requirements. The trainee will participate in GIS activities that support project planning, construction, land acquisition, environmental and social management, and asset information, while developing technical and professional competencies..
Key Responsibilities:
· Assist in the collection, processing, quality checking and maintenance of geospatial data, including pipeline route, right-of-way, land parcel and asset datasets.
· Support the maintenance and updating of the project geodatabase in line with defined data standards, coordinate systems and metadata requirements.
· Produce maps, plans and spatial visualizations, including web maps and dashboards, for engineering, land, environmental, social, HSE and construction teams.
· Perform spatial analysis and mapping to support route monitoring, land take analysis, environmental and social sensitivity assessment, and construction progress tracking.
· Process and interpret satellite imagery, drone (UAV) imagery and survey data, and assist in change detection and site monitoring.
· Support field data collection using GPS/GNSS devices and mobile GIS applications and validate collected data against source records.
· Review survey data, engineering drawings (CAD) and as-built information, and assist in integrating them into the GIS environment.
· Assist in the preparation of technical reports, data registers, map catalogues and GIS documentation.
· Support compliance with company HSE standards, data management and confidentiality requirements, and industry best practices; participate in site visits and contractor data audits as assigned.
Undertake structured learning and development activities as part of the graduate trainee program and contribute to continuous improvement of GIS workflows and automation.
.
· Bachelor’s degree in Geomatics, Geoinformatics, Geographic Information Systems, Surveying, Geography (with GIS), Environmental Science or a related field from a recognized University.
· Minimum academic performance requirement of a Second Class Upper Division or above.
· Graduation within last 1–2 years.
· Working knowledge of GIS software (ArcGIS/ArcGIS Pro or QGIS), including spatial analysis, geodatabases and cartography.
· Understanding of coordinate systems and map projections, GPS/GNSS, remote sensing and satellite/drone imagery; basic knowledge of CAD, SQL or Python scripting is an added advantage.
· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with good attention to data quality.
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Membership or eligibility for registration with a relevant professional body, such as the Institution of Surveyors of Uganda (ISU) or the Uganda Land Surveyors Association, may be an added advantage.
