Inclusive Recreation Instructor

Note: This is a part-time position with hours varying based on program needs, applicant availability, and assigned classes. Instructors may lead one or more Inclusive Recreation programs based on their interests, experience, and current program needs. Opportunities may include arts and crafts, fitness, water aerobics, life skills, bowling, social/recreation activities, and other programs for adults with disabilities. This position does not include benefits.

Plan, prepare, and lead engaging recreation classes and activities for adults with disabilities at the Federal Way Community Center and designated program sites. Serve as a positive role model, promote participant safety and independence, adapt activities to meet a variety of abilities and support needs, and create a welcoming and inclusive environment.

• Plan, prepare, and lead assigned classes or activities with enthusiasm and clear instruction.
• Create engaging, age-appropriate recreation experiences for adults with a variety of disabilities, abilities, and support needs.
• Adapt activities, equipment, communication, and instruction to encourage meaningful participation and individual success.
• Ensure participant safety throughout programs and follow established program procedures.
• Monitor participant behavior, provide appropriate redirection and support, and promote positive social interaction.
• Prepare program spaces, supplies, and equipment before class and complete cleanup after each program.
• Facilitate prearranged lesson plans, activities, projects, exercises, games, or skill-building opportunities based on the assigned program area.
• Assist participants as needed with program-related tasks and mobility support, while encouraging independence whenever possible.
• Administer basic first aid and respond appropriately to emergencies when needed.
• Maintain regular communication with the Inclusive Recreation Coordinator regarding program needs, participant concerns, supplies, incidents, and class updates.
• Interact professionally with participants, families, caregivers, volunteers, and other staff, addressing routine questions and directing concerns to the coordinator when appropriate.
• Provide ideas and feedback for future classes, activities, lesson plans, and program improvements.
• Complete required program documentation, reports, attendance records, and incident reports as assigned.
• Attend staff training sessions and meetings as required.
• Arrive prepared and on time for assigned programs and remain until program responsibilities are complete.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Minimum age: 18 years.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Current First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
• Experience working with individuals with disabilities is preferred.
• Experience, education, training, or a strong interest in recreation, teaching or coaching in a related program area is preferred.
• Ability to plan, organize, and lead activities for small groups with varying abilities and support needs.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to provide clear instructions and positive encouragement.
• Enthusiastic, patient, dependable, and committed to providing meaningful recreational experiences.
• Culturally sensitive and inclusive, with an understanding of diverse participant needs.
• Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with Inclusive Recreation staff, volunteers, caregivers, and other instructors.
• Ability and willingness to adapt activities and teaching approaches based on participant needs.
• Knowledge of basic safety and emergency procedures.
• Successful completion of employment reference and background checks.

Environmental Conditions/Physical Effort:

• Work is primarily performed in recreation and community center environments; some assigned programs may take place in a pool, gymnasium, bowling center, classroom, or other designated program space.
• Physical demands vary by program assignment and may include carrying, bending, stooping, squatting, reaching, standing, walking, demonstrating exercises or activities, and setting up program equipment.
• Must be able to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
• May be required to assist with or push individuals using wheelchairs or other mobility devices.
• Ability to adapt and perform effectively in active program environments and during emergency situations.
