Northrop Grumman Space Systems has an opening for a Manager Aeronautical Engineering 1 – Structural Test Bay (Tactical Manager) in our Mechanical & Energetics Engineering team within Launch Systems at our Chandler, AZ facility.

The Tactical Manager will support our Structural Test Bay responsible for technical oversight, guidance, and training of a team of 10+ highly qualified aerospace engineers and technicians. The team will be working towards technology maturation and testing of key structures, support equipment, components, and functional subsystems. These support vehicle design, and integration as well as Northrop Grumman’s goal of becoming a missile prime.

The Tactical Manager will be responsible for managing technical, schedule, cost, as well as resources allocated to each test. This includes identifying and addressing program risks to ensure project success, facilitating technical solutions based on heritage and similar tests, tracking the testing schedule, metrics reporting and interfacing with internal and external customers. The Structural Test group supports all programs at LED and has an average throughput of 270 tests annually. The Tactical Manager will be responsible for balancing multiple program’s needs into a single test bay schedule to support mission success.

The Manager will lead by example, ensure proper cross-training of the team, and make sure the team understands the requirements of each test and the individual tasks that are being assigned to the team. This includes having periodic meetings with Mechanical & Energetics Department Leadership to review the ME performance relative to the test schedule and budget, technical challenges, and staff development.

Essential Functions:

• Appropriately schedule development, ground support equipment and flight hardware testing
• Demonstrate a clear communication style, commitment to safety, and understanding of complex and conflicting schedule requests
• Conduct trade studies, generate quotes, and present test solutions at customer meetings
• Work with the structural analysis and instrumentation teams to obtain relevant data for model correlation and qualification/acceptance of flight and development structures
• Oversight of all testing including maintaining cost, schedule and support recurring status meetings
• Responsible for employee career development through routine 1:1 meetings, writing and delivering performance reviews, assigning training, and conducting performance improvement plans as-required
• Act as a liaison between Structural Test and Planning/Logistics to ensure timely delivery of tested product
• Act as liaison between Structural Test and Environmental Health and Safety, ensuring a ‘safety first’ culture
• Act as liaison between Structural Test and Quality Assurance, ensuring adherence to policies and specifications
• Mentor and develop team in the areas of test design, linear structural analysis, and customer/supplier interaction
• Provide direction, and address issues using skills obtained in the field of Mechanical Engineering preferably as it relates to missile and space systems

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and 5 years of related engineering experience, OR a Master’s in STEM and 3 years related engineering experience, OR a PhD in STEM 1 year related engineering experience
• Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Secret Security Clearance
• Ability to travel 10% of the time

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in Aerospace, or Mechanical Engineering
• Experience with transitioning teams to DevOps practices, agile development, scrums, and JIRA/Confluence
• CAD experience with Siemens NX and Teamcenter PLM or similar systems
• Prior launch vehicle and/or missile system design and integration experience
• Demonstrated performance in leading engineering teams
• Prior structural testing experience
• Prior structural analysis experience
• Other testing experience
• Active US Government Secret Security Clearance, or higher at the time of application

Primary Level Salary Range: $114,900.00 - $172,300.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
