Description
Road Division-
- Operates chip spreader, snow removal equipment, large trucks, backhoes, graders, loaders, brush choppers, compressors, mixers, generators, pneumatic equipment, and the transporter to haul heavy machinery
- Cuts, levels, and otherwise prepares roadbeds, may perform skilled and unskilled work in the construction and maintenance of bridges, culverts, miscellaneous drainage structures, driveways, guardrails, curbs, and related structures
- Removes and trims trees, brush, and undergrowth from roads and right of way
- Washes, cleans, and performs minor adjustments and repairs to equipment, including: lubrication, filters, replacing normal wear parts, changing tires, and consumables
- Grades surfaces to proper line and grade
- Cuts, levels, and otherwise prepares roadbeds, figures amount of material needed for jobs
- May perform skilled and unskilled work in the construction and maintenance of bridges, culverts, miscellaneous drainage structures, driveways, guardrails, curbs, and related structures
- Removes and trims trees, brush, and undergrowth from roads and right of way
- Washes, cleans, and performs minor adjustments and repairs to equipment, including:
- lubrication
- filters
- replacing normal wear parts
- changing tires and consumables
- Advises supervisor on operating conditions
- Reporting need for mechanical adjustment and repair
- Acts as a lead worker as required
- Operates less complex equipment or performs less skilled or manual laboring tasks when necessary
- Performs building crafts maintenance work
- Other related duties as assigned
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
Operator I -
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Two years of experience in road construction and maintenance work
- At least one year operating heavy power-driven road construction equipment, such as graders, dozers, or large earthmoving equipment or, as appropriate, operating tree cutting and removal equipment.
- Must possess a valid Class A operator’s license with tank, doubles, and airbrake endorsements issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles, or obtain a valid Class A operator’s license with tank, doubles, and air brake endorsements issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles within five months of hire date to successfully complete probationary period.
Operator II –
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Three years of experience in road construction and maintenance work
- At least two year of operating heavy power-driven road construction equipment, such as graders, dozers, or large earthmoving equipment or, as appropriate, operating tree cutting and removal equipment
- Must possess a valid Class A operator’s license with tank, doubles, and airbrake endorsements issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Operating, care, maintenance, and minor adjustment, and capabilities of power-driven construction and maintenance equipment such as bulldozers, motor graders, dump trucks, low-bed trucks, and compressors
Principles, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of roads, bridges, levees, waste cells, and related structures
Provisions of the California Vehicle Code and safe driving practices pertaining to the operation of road construction and maintenance equipment on streets and highways
Safe work practices, including handling hazardous wastes
ABILITY TO:
Skillfully and safely operate various types of heavy and light construction equipment
Tree maintenance and removal, and hand and power tools
Perform heavy construction or maintenance work
Maintain equipment assigned
Read and interpret blueprints and drawings
Perform skilled work in a variety of trades associated with bridge construction
Perform heavy construction or maintenance work to within close tolerances
Judge distances in ground levels and grade stakes
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions
Perform physical labor requiring manual dexterity and agility
Meet and maintain standards of physical endurance and agility
Work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work
Must have ability to drive for prolonged time
Stand, walk, sit, twist, and carry up to 95 pounds in course of work
Position will include exposure to
moving machinery which includes all trucks and equipment
noises caused by heavy equipment and tools
dust, fumes, and other irritants
ambient weather conditions which include a high of 125 degrees and a low of -10 degrees Fahrenheit.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Equipment Operator I must possess a valid Class A operator’s license with tank, doubles, and air brake endorsements issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles, or obtain a valid Class A operator’s license with tank, doubles, and air brake endorsements issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles within five months of hire date to successfully complete probationary period
- Equipment Operator II must possess a valid Class A operator’s license with tank, doubles, and air brake endorsements issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles
- Must successfully complete a pre-employment background investigation
- Must successfully pass pre-employment drug screen
- Required to wear safety shoes
- Position may be required to serve as a Disaster Service Worker during a County emergency

The County of Inyo has work sites located throughout the Owens Valley (Independence, Bishop, Lone Pine, Big Pine, and Olancha) and the Death Valley area (Death Valley, Tecopa, and Shoshone). All Inyo County positions are considered Countywide. Positions are assigned to a work site based upon the needs of the County. Positions may be temporarily or permanently reassigned to another work site as deemed necessary by the Department Head and/or County Administration.
