The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has an outstanding opportunity for an hourly Research Technologist I to join Dr. Stephen McCartney’s team in the Maternal and Fetal Medicine (MFM) Lab. 

 

About this Opportunity 

Reporting to Sam Rosen, the MFM Lab Manager, the Research Technologist I will be responsible for processing clinical samples in the Maternal Fetal Medicine labs.  They are also responsible for training junior lab members in lab processing, the general maintenance of the lab, and assisting the lab manager in research related to the immunology of pregnancy.   

 

Both positions are based at the Magnuson Health Sciences Building. These are in-person roles with no telework option. The anticipated hours for each position is 20 hours per week based on the amount of work available and may vary week to week. These positions will need to flex their hours to work early mornings, nights, weekends and occasionally UW holidays to align with the availability of delivery samples.  

 Key Responsibilities

Specimen Processing – 25% 

  •  Process blood and placenta samples, inventory samples in pregnancy biorepositories 
  • Optimize and document MFM research team protocols 
     

Flow Cytometry Work – 20% 

  • Perform experiments in pregnancy Immunology research utilizing flow cytometry 
  • Analyze flow cytometry data  
     

Research Coordination- 10% 

  • Assist Research Coordinators with patient recruitment and consenting 
  • Administer the Social Determinants of Health Survey 
     

Train junior lab assistants in Maternal Fetal Medicine Lab protocols – 15% 

General Lab Maintenance – 25% 

  • Assist Lab Manager with lab inventory, staffing, instrument upkeep, etc. 
  • Perform lab maintenance, safety, and cleaning per MFM and EH&S Protocols 
     

Dissemination of Findings – 5% 

  • Prepare abstracts, posters and research papers 

 

Required Qualifications

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

 

Minimum Qualifications 

Applicants who do not meet these qualifications WILL NOT be forwarded to the Hiring Department. 

  • Two years experience as a Laboratory Technician II, or equivalent; OR a Bachelors Degree in an appropriate field of science or technology. 
  • Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration. 

 

Additional Qualifications 

  • Must have experience with:  BD FACSymphony Cytometer, Guava Muse cell analyzer, Miltenyi GentleMACS, clinical blood and/or tissue processing 

 

Working Conditions 

  • Available to work very flexible hours including early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays as needed 
  • Telework is not available for this position 

 

Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

Pay Range Minimum:

$21.70 hourly

Pay Range Maximum:

$25.55 hourly
