Principal Investigator (Archaeology) – Texas

Texas (remote/hybrid options depending on project needs); Plano, TX preferred; travel required statewide

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Principal Investigator (PI) in Archaeology to lead archaeological investigations across Texas in compliance with the Texas Antiquities Code, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and other applicable federal and state regulations.

The PI will oversee all phases of archaeological work, manage project teams, coordinate with the Texas Historical Commission (THC), and ensure high‑quality deliverables for public- and private-sector clients.
Key Responsibilities
Project Leadership
  1. Serve as Principal Investigator for archaeological surveys, testing, data recovery, and monitoring projects
  2. Develop research designs, scopes of work, budgets, and schedules
  3. Lead field teams and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards
  4. Provide technical oversight for artifact analysis, site documentation, and reporting
Regulatory & Agency Coordination
  1. Prepare and manage Texas Antiquities Permit applications
  2. Coordinate with the Texas Historical Commission, TxDOT-ENV, federal agencies, and tribal representatives
  3. Ensure all work meets state and federal cultural resource requirements
Technical Writing & Deliverables
  1. Author or oversee high‑quality technical reports, research designs, and permit documents
  2. Review and approve site forms, GIS data, and artifact cataloging
  3. Present findings to clients, agencies, and stakeholders
Business Development
  1. Support proposal development and client outreach
  2. Identify new opportunities and contribute to strategic growth in the Texas market
Team Management
  1. Mentor junior archaeologists and field staff
  2. Provide training in field methods, compliance requirements, and reporting standards
Required Qualifications
  1. Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field
  2. Meets Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology
  3. Minimum 10 years of professional archaeological experience, including supervisory roles
  4. Demonstrated experience serving as PI on projects in Texas
  5. Strong knowledge of:
    1. Texas prehistoric and historic archaeology
    2. Texas Antiquities Code and THC permitting
    3. Section 106 compliance
  6. Proven ability to write and manage technical reports
  7. Valid driver’s license and ability to travel frequently
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Experience with large-scale linear projects (transportation, utilities, pipelines)
  2. Familiarity with GIS applications and digital field data collection
  3. Established relationships with Texas agencies and tribal nations
  4. Experience managing multi-disciplinary cultural resources teams
Physical & Field Requirements
  1. Ability to work outdoors in Texas weather conditions
  2. Ability to walk long distances, carry equipment, and perform field tasks as needed
  3. Willingness to travel for extended field assignments
