Asphalt Laboratory Technician – Role Overview

The Asphalt Laboratory Technician position is part of the Materials and Tests Unit at NCDOT, which is responsible for overseeing road construction materials throughout North Carolina. In this role, the technician performs laboratory tests on hot-mix asphalt to ensure quality and compliance with standards.

Key Responsibilities

The technician is tasked with receiving asphalt samples and preparing them for testing according to established procedures. The position also involves operating the Asphalt Pavement Analyzer (APA), an instrument that assesses rut depth in asphalt specimens to determine their resistance to deformation.
Beyond rut depth analysis, the role includes conducting advanced testing procedures on asphalt mixes. The technician must remain up to date with technological advancements, train colleagues on proper equipment usage, participate in maintenance activities, and ensure accurate calibration of laboratory instruments. This position is integral to the development of new specifications, testing methodologies, and sample preparation techniques within the unit.

The selected applicant for this position must possess the ability to work with obnoxious odors and chemicals. Must have the ability to climb and walk on high structures; lift samples and equipment weighing up to 60lbs. Must be able to stand for long periods of time and be able to wear safety glasses and other personal protective equipment.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC09 / $41,206.00 – $72,113.00          

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Knowledge of engineering theories, techniques, practices, and procedures relating to construction materials, sampling and test procedures.
  • Experience in the use of applicable software including Microsoft Office and databases.
  • Experience coordinating and communicating effectively with other team members to achieve a common goal.
  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking and completing tasks independently with limited supervision.
  • Experience operating and calibrating testing equipment.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
