Job Description:

Position Purpose summary:   

Under the direction of the Department Manager, the Laundry Aide works independently and cooperatively to maintain the cleanliness of the facility with regards to laundry while maintaining resident confidentiality.  Thoroughly and correctly sort, launder, fold, bag, tag and record laundry as required, according to instructions and established procedures.

Accountabilities:

Service-Operations:

  • Follows the direction of the Department Manager and their designates.

  • Learns the correct operation of all machines.

  • Routinely sorts and launders residents bedding including sheets, blankets, pillows and towels.

  • Routinely cleans laundry room and equipment (e.g. lint traps).

  • Organizes workload to provide efficient and productive use of time.

  • Collects all equipment and supplies to be used prior to starting task.

  • Carries out laundry duties in a safe manner. 

  • Operates equipment and uses supplies according to departmental procedures.

  • Observes hazardous conditions, furnishings and equipment.  Takes steps to immediately report any problems with equipment to Housekeeping Manager.

  • Demonstrates flexibility in carrying out duties.

  • Attends staff meetings.

  • Complies with legislation, regulations regarding WHMIS, Workplace Health & Safety

  • Carries out responsibilities as outlined in the Fire and Emergency Plan

  • Ensures that a pleasant, clean odor free and safe environment is provided to residents, staff and volunteers.

  • MU staff and Residents

  • Attend Staff Meetings as required

External:

  • None

MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY:  

  • Reports directly to: Department Manager

  • Direct reports for this position: None

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:  

  • Responsible for upkeep of laundry supplies – in consultation with the Manager

WORKING CONDITIONS:  

  • Working in a shelter setting

  • The performance of the job requires operating industrial size laundry machines and related equipment and supplies, sweeping and cleaning, and bending/twisting/lifting.

  • The incumbent is not required to lift more than 25 pounds

  • The performance of the job requires moderate to high attention when using mechanical equipment and handling potentially hazardous materials.

The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):

  • Always use cut/puncture-resistant gloves when handling dirty laundry, including when sorting.

  • Eye wash stations.

  • Regular hand-washing and sanitizing and wear approved mask where required.

The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:

  • Exposure to dirt, bodily fluids, bodily waste

  • Exposure to drugs and alcohol

  • Noise

  • Dealing with angry and abusive people

  • Verbal abuse

  • Odors

The incumbent may be exposed to the risk of moderate injury or illness due to:

  • Physical attacks by others (i.e., being attacked by a client/resident)

  • Exposure to infectious diseases

  • Exposure to toxic chemicals

  • Sharp Objects (i.e., needle sticks)

  • Other dangerous situations

Education and Experience Qualifications:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • No mandatory minimum work or educational experience required.

  • Functional literacy (English) is required.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:

  • E-learning (Abuse Prevention & WHIMIS) – to be completed before the first shift.

  • Clear vulnerable sector police reference check.

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Strong understanding of professional boundaries when working with a vulnerable population.

  • Ability to demonstrate understanding of and empathy toward cultural differences. Must be sensitive to and respectful of cultural and lifestyle diversity.

  • Ability to accept and follow instructions and carry out assignments.

  • Responsible to show up on time according to the schedule, ready and able to work independently and with maximum attention to detail.

  • Ability to organize work and carry out duties independently and in cooperation with others, with minimal supervision.

  • Strong sense of honesty and confidentiality.

  • Adhere to standards that are consistent with the values & philosophy of The Salvation Army.

  • Work cooperatively with, and with a positive attitude toward, management, colleagues, residents and contractors.

  • Participate fully and constructively in meetings as required.

  • Engage in Performance Excellence and Coaching sessions with Housekeeping Manager as required.

  • Encouraged to make suggestions that may improve efficiency, working conditions or procedures to management.

  • Participate in authorized training as requested.

  • Represent the Organization in a professional manner.

  • Maintains security and safety of environmental workplace

This is a casual position with no fixed working schedule.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $15.35 to $18.86 with a maximum of $22.64.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
