Field Service Engineer / Technician - Control Valves

Location: Workshop is in Middleton, Manchester
Territory: UK, Ireland & North Sea Offshore
Salary: £40,000 - £50,000 Basic DOE + Overtime + Excellent Benefits + 10% pension

About the Role

An established engineering services organisation supporting customers across the Oil & Gas, Power Generation and Process Industries is seeking a Mechanical Field Service Engineer / Technician to join its specialist Valve Services team.

This is an exciting opportunity for a mechanically minded engineer who enjoys hands-on work, customer interaction and travelling to a wide variety of industrial sites. Whilst previous control valve experience would be advantageous, we are equally interested in candidates from a broader mechanical maintenance background and will invest significantly in training and development for the right individual.

Engineers with experience in in-situ overhaul, plant maintenance, shutdowns, outages, rotating equipment or critical asset maintenance are particularly encouraged to apply.

This is a genuinely field-based position and will suit someone who enjoys variety, thrives in industrial environments and is willing to travel extensively when customer requirements demand.

Working Pattern & Travel

The role follows the cyclical nature of the industries we support, with a blend of workshop-based and field service activities throughout the year.

Winter Period (November - February)

Traditionally a quieter operational period with a greater focus on workshop activities, including:

  • Inspection, refurbishment and overhaul of control valves and associated equipment
  • Equipment testing and quality checks
  • Preparation of equipment for upcoming customer projects
  • Supporting engineering and service operations from our Middleton workshop

Summer Outage Season (March - October)

This period sees a significant increase in customer project activity, including:

  • Planned plant outages and shutdowns
  • Maintenance campaigns
  • Commissioning and start-up support
  • On-site valve servicing and refurbishment

Travel will be required across:

  • UK
  • Ireland
  • North Sea offshore installations

Regular overnight stays and periods away from home should be expected during busy project periods.

This position is ideally suited to an engineer who enjoys field-based work and has the flexibility to travel where customer needs dictate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Service, inspect and overhaul control valves and associated equipment
  • Carry out in-situ maintenance, repair and refurbishment activities at customer sites
  • Support planned shutdowns, outages and maintenance campaigns
  • Perform fault-finding, diagnostics and technical reporting
  • Assist with commissioning and plant start-up activities
  • Ensure all work is carried out safely and in accordance with site procedures
  • Build and maintain strong customer relationships through professional service delivery
  • Support workshop activities during quieter operational periods
  • Maintain accurate service documentation and reports

About You

Essential

  • Strong mechanical engineering background
  • Experience carrying out maintenance, overhaul or repair work on industrial plant and equipment

  • Strong communication and customer-facing skills

Highly Desirable

  • Control valve maintenance experience
  • Valve testing and overhaul experience
  • Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) knowledge
  • Experience within Oil & Gas, Power Generation, Petrochemical or Process industries
  • Offshore experience and/or offshore certification
  • Experience supporting plant shutdowns and outage programmes
  • In-situ overhaul experience on critical equipment
  • Experience working on rotating equipment

Qualifications

Formal qualifications are welcomed but are not essential.

We place greater emphasis on:

  • Practical engineering experience
  • Technical aptitude
  • Problem-solving ability
  • Attitude and willingness to develop

The following would be advantageous:

  • HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • Recognised engineering apprenticeship
  • Relevant industry certifications

Training & Development

  • Offshore survival and industry-specific certifications
  • Health & Safety training
  • Lifting & Handling training
  • Ongoing professional development through internal learning platforms

This role offers an excellent opportunity for a mechanically biased engineer to develop into a specialist within the control valve and instrumentation sector.

Salary & Benefits

Salary

£40,000 - £50,000 basic salary depending on experience.

Overtime

  • Significant overtime opportunities available throughout the year
  • Increased earning potential during outage and shutdown seasons
