Beloit Memorial Hospital is looking to add an Inpatient Coder to our Team!
- Shift: 1st
- Schedule: 8am - 4:30pm
- Hours per week: 40
- Benefits Status: Eligible
- Department: Health Information Management
The Inpatient Coder is responsible for providing accurate diagnostic and procedural codes (ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS and CPT-4 and HCPCS) for billing purposes as well as for collection and retrieval of statistical data. The inpatient coder also ensures coding accuracy, proper DRG assignment and adherence to all federal, state and payer regulations. Is also responsible for accurately abstracting information from the patient's medical record.
- Assigns appropriate codes to inpatient, observation and ambulatory surgery records.
- Demonstrates effective written and verbal communication with medical staff
- Determines the sequence of diagnoses according to coding guidelines
- Abstracts information from the patient's medical record
- Recognizes and resolves coding problems with limited supervision
- Maintains knowledge of payer requirements in adherence to coding compliance
- Reviews and corrects denials sent back from billing
- Works with medical staff regarding documentation and charge issues
- Understands and abides by HIPAA guidelines
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Outpatient Coding (COC), or equivalent coding credential preferred (If not certified, certification must be obtained within one year of hire.)
- Minimum of 2-3 years of inpatient coding experience in a hospital setting preferred
- Understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes.
- Experience reviewing complex medical records and assigning accurate DRGs.
- Knowledge of Medicare , Medicaid and commercial payer rules and reimbursement guidelines.
- Familiarity with EHR systems and encoder software.
- Strong computer and data entry skills
- Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills.
- Excellent attention to detail, commitment to accuracy with ability to maintain quality in a high-volume environment
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Maintains certification in good standing at all times
- Must adhere to established Beloit Health System and department policies, rules and regulations
- Maintain ethical conduct and abide by all HIPAA guidelines
