Distribution Systems Operator – Engineer I
Location: McDonough, GA 30253
Contract- 1Year
Client- Georgia Power
Shift: Rotating Shifts (Nights/Weekends Required)
Position Overview
The Distribution Systems Operator – Engineer I is a critical role within the utility/energy sector responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient distribution of electricity or gas to customers.
This position supports real-time system monitoring, emergency response, switching operations, load management, and coordination with field and engineering teams. The role may be filled by engineer or non-engineer candidates with relevant system operations experience.
Key Responsibilities
System Monitoring & Control
-
Monitor electrical or gas distribution systems using SCADA and DMS platforms

Oversee transformers, breakers, switches, feeders, and related equipment

Analyze system data to identify trends, anomalies, and improvement opportunities
Emergency Response & Restoration
-
Respond to alarms, outages, and emergency situations
-
Make real-time decisions to isolate faults and restore service
-
Follow safety protocols and regulatory requirements
Load & Switching Operations
-
Perform switching operations to reconfigure distribution systems
-
Manage load distribution to maintain system reliability
-
Support load shedding and restoration during peak demand events
Troubleshooting & Analysis

Diagnose equipment failures, voltage issues, and power quality concerns

Conduct root cause analysis and recommend corrective actions
Coordination & Communication
-
Maintain communication with field crews, dispatchers, and engineering teams

Support coordination of maintenance activities and upgrades
-
Collaborate with engineering, planning, and maintenance departments
Safety & Compliance
-
Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and company policies
-
Promote and maintain a strong safety culture
Documentation & Reporting

Maintain accurate records of system events and outages

Prepare reports and documentation as required
Training & Development

Participate in ongoing training to stay current on system operations, technology, and regulatory updates
Required Qualifications
Education
-
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or related field preferred
OR -
Equivalent industry experience in distribution system operations
Experience
-
Experience in utility distribution operations or related engineering role preferred
-
Familiarity with power distribution equipment and systems
Technical Skills
-
Proficiency in SCADA systems and Distribution Management Systems (DMS)
-
Strong knowledge of electrical or gas distribution principles
-
Ability to interpret system diagrams and operating procedures
Preferred Certifications
-
NERC certification (or ability to obtain)

Other relevant industry certifications
