THE ROLE
This is a rare opportunity to take on one of the British Business Bank’s most senior financial risk leadership roles, shaping disciplined risk-taking, robust underwriting standards and portfolio resilience across market cycles in support of the Bank’s public purpose mandate.
Reporting into senior risk leadership and working closely with the CRO, Executive Committee and Board, the role provides strategic oversight and independent challenge across credit risk, debt and equity investment risk, and the wider Financial Risk Management Framework. It sits at the heart of the Bank’s decision-making, acting as a critical counterbalance to origination and execution activity while helping ensure the portfolio remains resilient, well governed and aligned to mandate.
The position carries responsibility for evolving the Financial Risk Management Framework across a broad range of equity investment and wholesale debt products. This includes providing independent challenge on deal underwriting, valuation methodologies, financial modelling assumptions, downside stress scenarios, and the adequacy of underlying due diligence and deal processes. A key part of the role is giving the Board confidence in the quality of financial risk assessment and the standards applied across the Bank’s activities.
You will bring deep experience of financial risk management across relevant asset classes and economic cycles, with the judgement and credibility to advise senior stakeholders, influence risk appetite and shape the next generation of financial risk capability. Experience may have been gained in banking, asset management, private credit, development finance, regulation, the public sector or investment environments.
The Bank is seeking a seasoned risk professional with expertise in investment risk and/or credit risk management, ideally gained in a fund management organisation, bank or similarly complex financial institution. Strong technical understanding of financial analysis, debt and equity valuations, risk frameworks, structured products, illiquid assets, unlisted equities, securitisations and SME debt will be important, alongside a good understanding of the UK regulatory environment in which banks and fund managers operate.
This role offers the chance to apply a career’s worth of expertise at the intersection of finance, public policy and economic development. It combines exposure to debt, equity, guarantees, structured finance and venture capital within a single institution, with significant engagement at Executive Committee and Board level. It also provides an opportunity to develop the next generation of risk leaders, strengthen enduring organisational capability and leave a lasting legacy across one of the UK’s most important economic development institutions.
The offer includes direct contribution to UK economic growth and prosperity, influence over nationally important investment decisions, exposure to a diverse and complex portfolio, hybrid working and a culture designed to support sustainable senior leadership.

- Direct contribution to UK economic growth and prosperity
- Opportunity to influence nationally important investment decisions
- Exposure to debt, equity and venture capital portfolios
- Significant engagement with Executive Committee and Board
- Opportunity to shape long-term institutional capability and leave a lasting legacy
