Consider joining the City of Sioux Falls Engineering Department as a Staff Engineer focused on Traffic/Transportation Operations and Planning, helping shape the future of South Dakota’s largest community. We are an interdisciplinary team of professional engineers who pride ourselves on taking initiative and using innovation to shape our community. You’ll be part of a talented and committed team and play a crucial role in both developing and implementing various traffic and multimodal transportation programs.
1. Research, develop, and maintain specific engineering projects and programs, including design standards and specifications, ordinances, and evolving technologies.
2. Review plans, specifications, and/or plats submitted by outside consultants, contractors, developers, or other private individuals or groups and make recommendations regarding their acceptability. Review applicable annexation requests, right-of-way vacations and easement releases, subdivision financial securities, and permits applications.
3. Design plans and develop specifications and cost estimate for construction projects. Determine methods, locations, standards, type of materials, and estimated costs.
4. Provide project coordination for assigned construction projects and programs. Coordinate with stakeholders to ensure compliance with scope, budget, and schedule. Monitor projects for compliance with specifications, engineering design standards, and local, state, or federal rules, regulations, or ordinances. Answer questions and resolve issues related to assigned projects.
5. Coordinate design and bidding process, acquisition of easements or permits, and advertisement for bids. Collaborate with property owners, attorneys, government representatives, utility companies, etc., and attend related meetings.
6. Inspect construction activities and materials ensuring compliance and provide work direction and monitor the work methods of consulting engineers and architects, technicians, or any other departmental employees as assigned.
7. Perform other such duties and functions as are necessary or incidental to the proper performance of this position.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in civil, environmental, or transportation engineering; or any such combination of education, experience, and training as may be acceptable to the hiring authority.
The successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam is desirable for the C42 level position.
A licensed professional engineer with the state of South Dakota is required for the C42C level position.
Must possess or be able to obtain prior to hire a valid driver’s license.
Ability to perform complicated engineering assignments with minimal direction.
Knowledge of plans and specification interpretation, engineering and surveying principles, structural, utility, and/or street design and construction.
Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
Ability to think strategically, multitask, and conform to shifting priorities, demands, and timelines utilizing strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to plan, organize, and schedule work activities.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally, interpersonally, and in writing, to a variety of internal and external audiences.
