Role Summary
The Repair & Maintenance (R&M) Operative is responsible for carrying out reactive and planned maintenance activities on clean water and wastewater networks within the Horsham region.
Reporting to the Contracts Manager, the role focuses on the safe and efficient delivery of repair and maintenance works, ensuring customer service, quality, environmental and safety standards are consistently achieved.
The successful candidate will work as part of a field-based team responding to network defects, leaks, bursts, asset failures and maintenance requirements while maintaining compliance with client specifications and industry regulations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Operational Delivery
- Carry out excavation, repair, reinstatement and maintenance activities on water networks and associated assets.
- Undertake reactive repairs to leaking mains, service pipes and network infrastructure.
- Assist with planned maintenance, valve operations, flushing and asset inspections.
- Ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards.
- Operate hand tools, plant and equipment appropriate to the role.
- Complete job records, worksheets and digital reporting requirements accurately.
2. Health, Safety and Compliance
- Comply with all company health, safety and environmental procedures.
- Adhere to NRSWA requirements and site-specific traffic management arrangements.
- Ensure the correct use of PPE, tools and equipment.
- Report hazards, near misses, incidents and unsafe conditions promptly.
- Maintain water hygiene standards and regulatory compliance at all times.
3. Customer and Stakeholder Service
- Act professionally when interacting with customers, residents and stakeholders.
- Minimise disruption to customers and the public during works.
- Escalate customer concerns and operational issues through the appropriate channels.
- Support delivery of excellent customer satisfaction outcomes.
4. Environmental Performance
- Follow environmental controls and pollution prevention requirements.
- Ensure waste is managed in accordance with company procedures.
- Promote sustainable working practices and environmental awareness.
5. Teamwork & Continuous Improvement
- Work collaboratively with Gangers, Supervisors and Management teams.
- Support colleagues to achieve operational objectives and contractual targets.
- Participate in training and development activities.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across the contract.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Previous experience working within utilities, construction, highways or civil engineering environments.
- Experience carrying out excavation, reinstatement and repair activities.
- Knowledge of safe digging practices and utility network operations.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and under minimal supervision.
- Good communication and problem-solving skills.
- Flexible approach to working hours, including emergency call-out requirements where applicable.
- Commitment to health, safety and environmental compliance.
- Full UK driving licence.

- NRSWA Operative.
- Street Works experience.
- CPCS/NPORS Plant Tickets.
- First Aid at Work.
- Confined Space Training.
