Mō te tūranga | About the role

As the welcoming face of Te Papa Atawhai, you'll help visitors make the most of their time in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. Providing advice on recreation, conservation, and safety, you'll be the first point of contact for visitors, stakeholders, and DOC staff. Working within a close-knit team, you'll deliver exceptional customer service, manage visitor centre operations, support administrative processes, and contribute to a range of work programmes.

The position will be focussed on:

• Providing visitors information on day hikes, backcountry tramping, weather, track conditions, transport options, and safety recommendations

• Managing bookings for huts and campsites

• Maintaining a tidy, welcoming, and well-presented visitor centre

• Managing administrative tasks, including banking reconciliation, data entry, invoicing, and retail stock control

• Provide cross-functional support to our Heritage & Visitor programme, including cleaning and maintaining campgrounds, shelters, huts, toilets, and bathroom facilities as required

• Managing track closures and monitoring visitor access

Our Visitor Centre operates seven days a week. This position is rostered five days on and two days off and includes weekend and public holiday work.

This is a varied and fast-paced role that requires flexibility, initiative, and a passion for helping visitors connect with our natural environment.

If you have some of following, we are keen to hear from you:

• Experience in a visitor centre, tourism, retail, sales, or other customer-facing environment

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships and work effectively as part of a team

• The ability to remain organised and maintain high standards in a busy environment

• Problem solving abilities, initiative, and a positive ‘can-do' attitude

• An interest in conservation and the outdoors, with an understanding of recreation and tourism opportunities in Aoraki/Mount Cook and the wider Eastern South Island Region.

• Confidence using computer systems and learning new technology

• The ability to communicate safety information clearly and positively

• Availability to work weekends and public holidays

• A current full New Zealand driver's licence
