Position Summary...
What you'll do...
About the team
The GIF team builds and operates critical platform capabilities that enable store and fulfillment workflows at Walmart scale across global markets. Our backend systems sit on high-volume, business-critical paths and must remain fast, resilient and observable while supporting continuous change and market expansion. The team owns the full engineering lifecycle - architecture, coding, testing, deployment, production readiness, monitoring, incident response and continuous modernization.
What You’ll Do
Architect, design and write production-quality backend services, primarily in Java/Spring Boot (with Go where appropriate), for high-throughput, low-latency and highly available distributed systems.
Own complex system-design and performance problems end to end: capacity, concurrency, caching, messaging, partitioning, consistency, fault isolation, graceful degradation, failover and disaster recovery.
Lead deep production troubleshooting using metrics, logs, distributed traces, profiling and runtime diagnostics; drive rapid mitigation, rigorous root-cause analysis and durable corrective actions.
Raise engineering quality across code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, SLOs, production readiness and operational practices; mentor engineers and influence architecture across teams.
Use AI/GenAI tools as part of the software-engineering lifecycle - coding, refactoring, code review, test generation, debugging, troubleshooting, performance analysis, RCA and documentation - and help establish safe, repeatable practices that improve engineering productivity.
What You’ll Bring
10+ years of professional software-engineering experience (or equivalent depth), with strong recent hands-on backend development and a track record of Staff-level technical ownership.
Deep proficiency in Java and modern backend frameworks such as Spring/Spring Boot; strong Go engineers may also be considered when they demonstrate equivalent backend depth and can work effectively in Java.
Deep knowledge of distributed systems and microservices, including event-driven architecture, Kafka or similar messaging, SQL/NoSQL data stores, caching, consistency, idempotency, retries/timeouts, partitioning, concurrency and performance tuning.
Strong production-engineering skills: troubleshooting high-severity issues, profiling and latency analysis, observability, Kubernetes/cloud-native systems, automated testing, CI/CD, resilience and disaster-recovery patterns.
Demonstrated use of AI/GenAI-assisted engineering for real software-delivery work, with the ability to validate outputs, protect quality and security, and apply AI effectively to coding, testing, debugging, troubleshooting and documentation; strong communication, mentoring and cross-team influence are essential.
