Description

The City of Bend is accepting applications for one (1) regular, full-time Equipment Technician in the Fleet Department. This is an hourly, non-exempt (overtime eligible) position represented by the City of Bend Employee Association (COBEA). The City may use this recruitment to establish an eligibility list for future vacancies. Please review the entire job posting, including the application requirements at the end.

The City of Bend is looking for a skilled and motivated Equipment Technician to help keep the vehicles and equipment that support our community operating safely and reliably. From police and fire vehicles to heavy construction equipment, snowplows, and support fleet vehicles, this role plays a critical part in maintaining the equipment City employees depend on every day. A typical day may include diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues, performing preventive maintenance, completing repairs, and working alongside a team of technicians to keep the City's fleet in top condition.

This position offers the opportunity to work on a diverse range of equipment and evolving technologies, including modern diesel engines, advanced vehicle electronics, alternative fuel systems, and specialized municipal equipment. As the City continues to grow and invest in infrastructure and public services, Equipment Technicians have the chance to expand their skills, learn new technologies, and contribute to projects that improve fleet reliability and efficiency.

This is more than a mechanic position. It is an opportunity to support critical community services by ensuring the vehicles and equipment used by Public Works, Utilities, Public Safety, and other City departments are ready when needed. The work is challenging, rewarding, and highly visible, making it an excellent fit for someone who takes pride in quality workmanship, problem solving, and public service.

Classification Framework: Equipment Technician

The following duties are a sample of major duties performed in this role and are not intended to be an exhaustive list.

  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on a variety of City vehicles, heavy equipment, and specialized machinery.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic system issues.
  • Maintain gasoline, diesel, and alternative-fuel powered equipment.
  • Conduct safety inspections and help ensure fleet assets meet operational and regulatory standards.
  • Utilize computerized diagnostic equipment, maintenance software, and technical manuals to troubleshoot equipment concerns.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns and prioritize repairs to minimize downtime.

  • Coordinate with equipment operators, vendors, and other technicians to support reliable fleet operations.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized shop environment.
  • Participate in emergency response and operational support activities when needed.

We're looking for someone who is dependable, safety-minded, and takes pride in maintaining equipment that supports essential City services.
