As a Software Engineer at Applied Materials, you’ll dive deep into ground-breaking technologies—like machine learning and AI—to craft novel software solutions that solve our customers’ high-value problems. Our Software Engineers are responsible for designing, prototyping, developing, and debugging software solutions for semiconductor equipment components and devices to ensure quality and functionality. You'll develop software documentation and test procedures, troubleshoot software problems, and communicate with internal customers to understand project requirements. As part of our team, you'll contribute your expertise in intricate systems, deciphering code, and anticipating software behaviors to ensure Applied remains the leader in the semiconductor and display sectors.
SW Applications Engineer:
This position is within the process diagnostics and control (PDC) group, which deals with advanced imaging together with cutting edge image processing & AI algorithms and electronic design data to detect, measure and classify nanometer size defects and pattern variations from semiconductor fabrication process steps. As PDC to multi-source data products and AI-based solutions, this engineer plays a central role in both shaping those products and driving their success in the field.
What You’ll Do
Product Performance & Application
- Maximize the performance of Data Products through deep understanding of customer use-cases and close technical collaboration with R&D, Algorithms, and Product teams
- Extend applicative expertise across multiple data sources (CAD, design, process, inspection) and beyond LINK to the full PDC product portfolio
- Ensure applicative value and readiness of SW and algorithmic solutions prior to and during field deployment
Field Execution & Customer Success
- Drive adoption and integrated deployment of Data Product solutions at leading semiconductor fabs worldwide
- Serve as the technical escalation point for complex field issues, providing rapid resolution and root cause analysis
- Develop utilities and scripts (Python) for debugging, workflow automation, and issue isolation
Innovation & Roadmap Contribution
- Conceptualize and prototype technical flows that convert multi-source data into new applications and insights
- Translate Voice of Customer (VoC) and field learnings into concrete product requirements and roadmap inputs
- Explore and validate AI/ML-based approaches that advance PDC's data product capabilities

What You Bring
- Master’s / Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering, Computer Science, VLSI, or a related field
- 2–5 years of experience in semiconductor process and defectivity, with hands-on knowledge of CAD and design-based inspection concepts
- Proficiency in Python; experience building scripts, tools, or analytical workflows
- Familiarity with AI/ML concepts and practical experience applying them to data analysis or product development
- Comfort with GenAI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot) for code generation, debugging, and documentation
- Willingness to travel ~50% to leading fabs globally
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and within cross-functional teams
- Excellent communication skills — equally effective with customers, field teams, and R&D engineers
