Description
At Genestack, we are tackling the underlying computational and scientific challenges of bioinformatics to provide researchers with software tools that streamline discovery and help advance precision medicine, drug development, and bioinformatics research.
Our platform is used by leading pharmaceutical, agricultural, and consumer goods companies, as well as academic institutions.
We are looking for a proactive Website Developer to take long-term technical ownership of our official website, genestack.com.
This is a freelance consulting engagement rather than a full-time role. The ongoing workload is expected to be around 10 hours per month on a retainer basis, with additional hours agreed separately when larger website projects, redesigns, or technical improvements require more substantial involvement.
You will own the technical side of our web presence, work closely with our designer and internal team, and help us make pragmatic, durable technical decisions. We are looking for someone who communicates proactively, understands the site in depth, and can act as a long-term technical partner rather than simply deliver individual tasks.
In this role, you will:
- Build, refactor, and maintain genestack.com on our current stack (MODX CMS hosted on AWS), while keeping content easy for non-technical team members to manage.
- Own the technical health of the website, including maintenance, bug fixes, upgrades, deployment, hosting, performance, and stability.
- Partner with our designer to implement clean, responsive, accessible pages and reusable UI components.
- Monitor website performance and analytics, support technical SEO, and recommend relevant improvements.
- Maintain cookie and consent tooling such as Enzuzo in line with business requirements.
- Proactively identify technical risks and recommend practical, durable solutions.
We would like you to have:
- Proven experience building and maintaining production websites over time.
- Strong HTML, CSS, and JavaScript skills, with confidence in responsive and accessible web development.
- Hands-on experience with PHP-based CMS platforms comparable to MODX.
- Experience with Git, deployment workflows, hosting, and basic performance monitoring.
- Good understanding of website security, backups, technical SEO, and Core Web Vitals.
- Ability to build and maintain form integrations, particularly with CRM platforms like Salesforce.
- Strong practical use of modern AI-assisted development tools, combined with sound engineering judgement.
- Clear, proactive communication and experience working directly with designers and non-technical stakeholders.
- Fluent English.
It would be nice if you have:
- Direct experience with MODX.
- Experience with AWS.
- Familiarity with website analytics and cookie/consent management tools.
Why work with us:
- Take real ownership of the technical side of an established company website.
- Work on a long-term basis rather than moving from one isolated project to another.
- Have direct input into technical decisions and how the website evolves over time.
- Work closely with a small, collaborative team that values pragmatic solutions and clear communication.
- Contribute to the web presence of a company working on meaningful problems in the life sciences.
