This temporary position will advise a caseload of incoming first-year students to educate them on the courses they need for the following semester. This position will also help ensure students are in the right classes, support their transition to PSU, and assist those who are having academic difficulties. This position will guide undeclared students through the major and career exploration process.

Duties/Responsibilities

Academic Advising Caseloads (70%) 

  • Advisee caseloads of psychology and undeclared students (approx. 75)

  • Advise undeclared students (help with transition to college, registration & classes, major & minor exploration, educate on advising tools and platforms, etc.) 

  • Help undeclared students transition into a major 

Academic Support Advising (30%) 

  • Assist students with low 6-week grades

  • Create plans to increase GPA’s and improve academic performance 

  • Consistent check-ins on progress in classes, attendance, assignments, mental health, etc. and offer accountability and encouragement 

Requirements

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in higher education, human resources, program administration or related field.  

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Experience coaching and advising students.  

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.   

  • Public speaking experience.  

  • Career development knowledge and skills.  

  • Program/workshop development and facilitation experience.  

  • Proficiency with various technology platforms including Microsoft Office Suite, student database software and other educational technology tools. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree preferred with a minimum of two years of experience in student advising, higher education, human resources, program administration or related field.  

  • Experience in college/university academic advising or career development office.  

  • Experience developing and implementing programming for students.  

  • Evidence of an innovative and research-based mindset.  

  • A strong understanding of student development, especially in the first year of college.
